The short walk to see thousands of glow worms in their natural habitat is a highlight, offering a unique New Zealand experience. "As it was our second time seeing glow worms, after taking a tour on the north island, it was fabulous to see that this place shows glow worms in a natural environment and completely free! Just 1 minute walking from the parking, and you already see the amazing creatures.

We came back when it was daylight as well, and was amazing to see how the environment is that they live in!"

Fan

"Great little roadside attraction. Interesting to see in the day and night. I would recommend trying both. This is an undercut rock formation supporting a glow worm habitat. Amazing contrast at night between the glow worms and the Milky Way."

"Visited in November at about 10pm. There was a full moon so it wasn’t completely dark but we still had a brilliant showing of glow worms in the Dell. We stayed for over an hour and saw thousands of glow worms as we got accustomed to the darkness. A really spectacular natural phenomenon and its free and relatively quiet. There were a few idiots dazzling us with head torches when they came into the dell and a few more idiots making loud travel plans in front of the glow worms but if you stay long enough you can have the place to yourself.

Very easy spot to find - just park by the sign in one of the laybys and follow the path into the dell."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Glow Worms

The 'glow worms' you see at Glowworm Dell Hokitika are actually the larval stage of a specific type of fly, Arachnocampa luminosa. These tiny creatures emit a bioluminescent light from their tails to attract prey, typically small insects. The light is a chemical reaction involving luciferin, luciferase, and ATP. TikTok

In Hokitika, they thrive in the damp, sheltered environment of the dell, clinging to the cave-like rock formations. Their sticky, mucus-covered threads hang down, trapping unsuspecting insects drawn to the light. It's a fascinating natural predator-prey relationship playing out in the dark. Reddit

It's important to remember that these are living creatures. Minimizing disturbance by avoiding bright lights and noise is crucial for their survival and for the enjoyment of other visitors. Reddit

Photography at Glowworm Dell Hokitika

Capturing the magic of Glowworm Dell Hokitika requires patience and the right approach. The biggest challenge is the near-total darkness. For the best results, a tripod is essential to keep your camera steady during long exposures, which can range from 15 to 30 seconds or even longer. Instagram

Experiment with your camera's manual settings. A wide aperture (low f-number) will let in more light, and a high ISO can help capture the faint glow, though be mindful of image noise. Focusing can be tricky; try setting your lens to manual focus and adjusting it to infinity, or use a very distant light source to pre-focus. Instagram

Many visitors find that while phone cameras can capture a hint of the glow, they often struggle to do it justice. If photography is a priority, consider using a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Remember to be respectful of the environment and other visitors by keeping light use to an absolute minimum. Reddit

Respecting the Natural Environment

Glowworm Dell Hokitika is a precious natural habitat, and responsible tourism is key to its preservation. The glow worms are sensitive to light and noise, which can disrupt their feeding and mating behaviors. Reddit

Visitors are strongly advised to avoid using their phone torches or any bright lights. If you need light to navigate, a red-filtered headlamp or torch is recommended, as red light is less disruptive to the glow worms. InstagramReddit

Beyond light, keeping noise levels down is also important. Speak softly and avoid loud conversations. By being mindful of these simple practices, you help ensure that this magical natural spectacle can be enjoyed by future generations. Reddit
