Reviews Summary

Myers Park is lauded for its excellent, modern playground that caters to all ages and its pleasant daytime atmosphere, offering a green escape in the city center. Visitors appreciate the interactive 'Waimahara' art installation and the well-maintained walking paths. However, a significant concern raised by many is the park's reputation for being unsafe after dark, leading to a strong recommendation to visit only during daylight hours.

"Perfect park for the little one to get some wiggles out. Almost four year old loved the opportunity for open ended game development. Lots of obstacle course options, tons of running space, and play equipment for about every age. Highlights for her were the big swing and awesome hide and seek spaces."

Y. Holes

"This playground is absolutely ideal for my little one, who is just a toddler. It offers a safe, engaging, and age-appropriate environment that allows young children to explore and play freely. One of the key highlights of this park is its location—it is set well away from busy roads, which gives parents peace of mind and creates a much safer space for children to roam. The park is also very family-friendly, with clean facilities and features that cater to a range of ages. It has quickly become a favorite spot for our family outings, and my toddler especially loves coming here. Among all the playgrounds we’ve visited in Auckland City, this one stands out as a top choice for both fun and safety."

Gina Macaraeg

"The green space is charming with a small area to actually be in the green space and otherwise large trees flanking both sides of an easy walking path. It has clean public restrooms and a drinking fountain.

The playground is okay but I recommend a small toy with wheels to spark imagination. The ground is between old school playground and new "safer" ground. The equipment held my 9 year old attention for about 15 minutes.

The cultural display is the gem of Meyers Park experience."

Safety and Community Perceptions

Myers Park's reputation is a complex topic among locals and visitors. While many describe it as a pleasant green space during the day, with a fantastic playground and tranquil walking paths, a significant number of Reddit users express strong reservations about its safety after dark. Comments frequently mention feeling unsafe, encountering unsavory characters, and even hearing about past incidents. Reddit+2 This perception seems to stem from issues related to homelessness and potential criminal activity, leading to a general consensus to avoid the park at night. Reddit+1

Conversely, some individuals, particularly those who live nearby or frequent the park daily, report never having had issues, even when visiting at night. Reddit They suggest that the park's basin design might contribute to a more negative perception than reality and that the presence of a daycare and playground means it's well-used by local families during the day. Reddit The recent redevelopment of the Mayoral Drive underpass and the 'Waimahara' art installation has also aimed to improve the area's ambiance and deter negative activities by increasing visibility and engagement. Instagram+1

Ultimately, the advice leans towards enjoying Myers Park during daylight hours. If you do visit, being aware of your surroundings is key. The park is a valuable city amenity, but like many urban spaces, it has a dual reputation that visitors should be mindful of. Reddit

The 'Waimahara' Interactive Art Experience

A standout feature of Myers Park is the 'Waimahara' art installation, located under the Mayoral Drive underpass. This isn't just a static display; it's an interactive experience designed to engage visitors through light and sound. Instagram+1 The installation draws inspiration from nature and Māori culture, incorporating elements like birdsong, traditional Māori instruments (taonga pūoro), and the sounds of water. Instagram

Visitors can activate 'Waimahara' by making noise. While some TikToks show direct interaction with buttons or QR codes, the general idea is that sound triggers the dynamic light and audio effects. Instagram+1 This creates a magical and immersive atmosphere, transforming the often-overlooked underpass into a captivating space. It's a testament to how public art can revitalize urban areas and offer unique, memorable experiences for those who explore the park. Instagram+1

The installation has been praised for its meaningfulness and beauty, offering a moment of wonder within the city. It's a must-see for anyone visiting Myers Park, providing a delightful contrast to the park's more traditional offerings like the playground and walking paths. Instagram+1

Family-Friendly Playground and Green Space

Myers Park boasts a highly-rated playground that is a major draw for families. Reviewers consistently praise its suitability for a wide range of ages, from toddlers to older children. Reddit The play equipment is described as modern and engaging, offering ample opportunities for open-ended play, climbing, and imaginative games. Highlights often mentioned include a large swing and excellent hide-and-seek spots. Reddit

Beyond the playground, the park offers a pleasant green space for relaxation and light activity. Well-maintained walking paths wind through mature trees, providing a peaceful environment for a stroll. Visitors can also enjoy views of the iconic Auckland Sky Tower and a charming rose garden. Reddit The park is equipped with clean public restrooms and a drinking fountain, making it convenient for longer visits. Reddit

While the park is appreciated for its family-friendly atmosphere and safe daytime environment, it's important to reiterate the strong advice from many to avoid visiting after dark.
