What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Municipal Cave for its unique underground Christmas market and historical significance. The cool cave atmosphere and festive decorations are highlights, though some note limited food options and a focus on merchandise over artisanal crafts. The train tour is a well-regarded way to learn about the cave's past.
"Visited on the very first day of this season!
If you’ve never been here before, then it’s definitely a NO-BRAINER to visit! experience Christmas festivities in a cave set up, which is pretty unique.
the cave has a pleasant cool temperature, and this one is more lively that the velvet cave. if you’re only looking for exploring and not shopping, you can easily cover this in an hour. But in most cases you’ll find yourself invested in purchasing something. Compared to Amsterdam, the prices of souvenirs aren’t too bad (some of them were even slightly cheaper).
Will make a full video of my complete experience and upload it on my YouTube. Hope you find me there 👋 🎥
Pro tip: visit on weekdays, or weekend mornings. I was lucky with the crowd since i was one of the first few visitors in the cave since I visited the very first day."

"The Gemeentegrot Christmas Market is definitely one of the most unique Christmas markets I have visited, simply because it takes place inside a historic cave. The cave is filled with beautifully decorated paths and lamps that create a festive and warm atmosphere. The lighting is stunning, and there are plenty of Christmas themed decorations, ornaments, and gifts on display throughout the market.
The focus here is more on the shopping experience and the enchanting cave setting than on traditional festive food and drink. Food and drink options are limited, so it does not have the same cozy, culinary atmosphere as some other Christmas markets."

"This was a very unique experience but I was let down by the lack of homemade and quality Christmas decorations. It felt like most of the stuff being sold was just from action. I still enjoyed the experience and the atmosphere."
