What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Valkenburg Coal Mine are mixed, with many visitors finding the experience educational but also noting issues with misleading branding as the 'last mine,' lengthy tours, and inconsistent guide quality. Some guests were particularly put off by the parking fee and the demeanor of staff. While it offers a glimpse into mining history, potential visitors should manage expectations regarding its replica nature and tour experience.
"What an absolute horrible person. They charge 5 euro for parking and I was offended the moment I drove in. After this he wanted me to park in a specific place. I said I was afraid it would damage my car, because my tire would be at a curb. Then he asked if I had learned how to drive and I should have had my driving license. Upon arrival in the cave, the second man was also unpleasant and he let us wait 15 minutes! (He wasnt helping other costumers or doing someting serious, it was his break🙃). So we went too the cave next to it. (Small tip... he is from his away from his desk most of the time... so you can sneak in... cause these people dont deserve the money.)"

"It was a shame that this "mine" is advertised as last mine in The Netherlands. It's a replica but they make it sound like an actual mine. You should rename it to museum/educational tour instead of last mine. Very misleading.
Won't recommend going here."

"Took almost 45 minutes longer then the time that was mentioned. We had a tour of about 2 hours, it was just too long. The group was too big, some would always stand in the back and couldnt see.
Story the guide told wasnt really the best. We didnt get the point of most of what he was saying. He made a bunch of inappropriate jokes eventhough there were also children there.
A bunch of the group left after half an hour and the other half of the group wished they did."

Understanding the Valkenburg Coal Mine Experience
While the intention is educational, some visitors have found the presentation misleading due to the 'last mine' branding. Additionally, the length of the tours can sometimes exceed the advertised duration, and group sizes can be large, potentially impacting the viewing experience for those at the back. The quality of the storytelling and the appropriateness of jokes made by guides have also been points of contention for some visitors, particularly when children are present.
Despite these criticisms, the Valkenburg Coal Mine offers a unique opportunity to learn about a significant part of Dutch industrial history. For those who appreciate historical reenactments and are prepared for the replica nature of the attraction, it can still be an informative and engaging visit. Considering combitickets for nearby attractions like Mergelrijk might also enhance the overall value of your visit.
Navigating Visitor Feedback and Practicalities
Regarding the tour itself, the duration is frequently mentioned. While advertised as a certain length, many found it to be considerably longer, with one review stating it took 45 minutes more than expected and was simply 'too long.' The size of the groups is another factor that can detract from the experience, as it makes it difficult for everyone to see and hear the guide effectively.
Furthermore, the quality of the guide's narrative and their sense of humor have been criticized. Some found the stories unengaging or difficult to follow, while others were put off by inappropriate jokes, especially in the presence of children. These aspects, combined with the replica nature of the mine, have led some visitors to strongly recommend against visiting. However, for those seeking an educational experience about mining history, and who are aware of these potential drawbacks, the mine can still offer insights. Checking for combitickets with Mergelrijk is a practical tip for potentially improving the value proposition.
