Some find it a peaceful alternative to the busier Cabo San Lucas.
"During my visit to Cabo on Feb 2025, I wanted to visit San Jose Del Cabo for the day. Our hotel concierge suggested to call for an Uber to the Mision, the heart of this neighborhood.
This was my second time to visit this church. This time we came and sat down for a prayer before seeing the rest of downtown. It's a quiet church, old with a lot of generations of history. It's beautiful and reminded me of me of the cathedrals from my childhood city in the only Spanish colony in Asia. For hundreds of years my childhood country was tied in for commercial trade between Cabo and the Philippines. So it's special."

"If you like Mexico, you will like it here. A lot of art. Much less noisy than Cabo St Lucas. If you are looking for a spring break atmosphere, then go there. Else come here. Don't expect any bargains either place."

The Art Walk on Thursdays can be a fun, family-friendly evening event with music and a lively atmosphere, though it can get crowded. Keep in mind that San José del Cabo is generally less about high-energy attractions and more about cultural immersion, which can be a refreshing change for families seeking a quieter pace.

Exploring the Historic Heart: Mission San José del Cabo
The mission's history is intertwined with significant local events, including the Pericúe Rebellion initiated by indigenous people against Jesuit priests in 1734, during which the founding father, Nicolas Tamaral, was martyred. This historical depth adds another layer to the experience, making it more than just a visit to a beautiful building. For those interested in the cultural heritage of Baja California Sur, the mission provides a poignant connection to the past.
Beyond the mission itself, the surrounding Plaza Mijares is a vibrant cultural center. It's particularly lively on Thursday evenings when the Art Walk transforms the Gallery District into a festive hub with local art, music, and community gatherings. This makes the mission and its plaza a perfect starting point for exploring the charming streets of San José del Cabo, discovering small shops, colorful street art, and hidden artistic gems.
Navigating Los Cabos: San José vs. Cabo San Lucas
In contrast, Cabo San Lucas is renowned for its energetic marina, vibrant nightlife, and iconic Arch (El Arco). It's a popular spot for water sports, boat tours, and a more bustling, resort-centric vacation experience. While both cities are part of the Los Cabos region, they offer vastly different vibes. Many visitors choose to stay in one and day-trip to the other to experience the best of both worlds.
Transportation between the two towns is relatively easy, with local buses and Ubers readily available, making it simple to shuttle between the laid-back charm of San José and the lively energy of Cabo San Lucas. This accessibility allows travelers to tailor their Los Cabos experience to their preferences, whether they seek quiet exploration or lively entertainment.
