"We take 14:30 boat to visit orang utan. Have to buy ticket. The boat have to bring us cross the island n takes around 15 mins to reach the island. Orang utan so cute. Omg … 1 of the orang utan size bigger than us. We’re lucky when we visit them they all very active playing eating crawling up n down. There’s a tour guide there will give an explanation about Orang utan story. Worth visiting no regret ."

"Had a great time on the island the guides are very knowledgeable and do a good job of explaining the process of the conservation of the species and what they specifically do to help (breeding work) after that you go on a short walk through a fenced off area. You pass information boards and the apes themselves. They claim the apes have full range of the island but it seems to be sectioned off and the apes separated which was interesting. But overall a cool place and worth visiting if you are in the area. Be warned though you won't be able to get a grab away from the resort area so I recommend pre booking a taxi."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The 'Reverse Zoo' Concept

Orang Utan Island in Bukit Merah employs a unique 'reverse zoo' concept, setting it apart from traditional sanctuaries. Instead of visitors being in enclosures and animals roaming freely in cages, humans are safely housed within a sheltered boardwalk tunnel. This allows the orangutans to live in a more natural, forested habitat that closely mimics their environment, while visitors can observe them up close without causing disturbance. Instagram

This innovative approach ensures the well-being of the orangutans by providing them with ample space and freedom to exhibit natural behaviors. It also offers visitors an immersive and respectful way to connect with these intelligent primates, fostering a deeper appreciation for their conservation needs. The design prioritizes both animal welfare and an enriching visitor experience. Instagram

This method is crucial for the rehabilitation and eventual release of orangutans back into the wild. By minimizing human interference and maximizing their natural environment, the foundation aims to prepare them for a successful return to their native habitats. Instagram

Conservation and Rehabilitation Efforts

The Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation (BMOUIF), established in 2000, is dedicated to the conservation and rehabilitation of endangered Bornean Orangutans. Initially an ex-situ conservation facility, its mission has evolved to encompass a comprehensive five-pronged strategy. This includes critical conservation work, rehabilitation of rescued orangutans, ongoing research, and the promotion of educational initiatives. Instagram

Visitors often express admiration for the staff's passion and the tangible efforts made to protect these animals. Guides share individual orangutan stories and explain the foundation's role in breeding programs and helping orangutans that have been orphaned or rescued. This educational aspect is a significant part of the visitor experience, leaving many feeling inspired and informed about the challenges faced by orangutans. Reddit+2

The foundation's work is vital in combating threats like habitat loss and illegal pet trade. By supporting Orang Utan Island, visitors contribute directly to these crucial conservation efforts, making their trip both enjoyable and impactful. Instagram

Planning Your Visit: Practicalities

To make the most of your visit to Orang Utan Island, timing is key. Arriving early for the first boat of the day is highly recommended. This strategy helps you beat the heat, avoid larger crowds, and often offers the best chance to see the orangutans at their most active. Instagram

When it comes to getting around, be aware that transportation options immediately outside Bukit Merah Laketown Resort can be limited. If you're not staying at the resort, it's wise to pre-book a taxi or arrange your onward travel in advance to avoid any inconvenience after your visit. Reddit

The visit itself is relatively short, with most people spending about an hour on the island. This timeframe is usually sufficient to explore the boardwalk, observe the orangutans, and absorb the information provided by the knowledgeable guides. Reddit
