What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Naeba Highlands is highly praised as a fantastic ski resort, especially for beginners and families, offering a great balance of terrain variety and affordability. Visitors appreciate the less crowded slopes compared to other popular spots and the convenient Prince Hotel location. While the journey from Tokyo requires planning, the overall experience is considered well worth the travel.
"Naibos ski resort is the biggest and best equipped in the area if not all of Niigata. It has high speed lifts, gondolas, and conveyor belt lifts for beginners. If this is the first time skiing with friends of varied ability or with a family this is probably the best ski resort to go to. It's huge and has a gondola that gets you to the next ski resort over. With it's huge size and variety of terrain it'll satisfy anyone. There is the Prince hotel which is literally at the bottom of the slopes so you have a close place to stay and the prices are a fraction of that in the USA. Single day lift ticket are under 7000 yen or less than $50 for a full Day ticket. Check around as you can get discounts or they have a 5-hour ski pass for 5000 yen. Naeba it's also great to spend several days at as it's so big you cannot ski the entire resort within a single day. It'll take several."

"It’s far from Tokyo but it’s absolutely worth going, I’m an amateur snowboarder but the snow was fluffy and soft which made it easier for me and more enjoyable. The lift ticket was also a fair price and if you’re good at this you could do it as many times as you want, the queue isn’t too bad.
The staff are friendly and there was someone needed help which they sent snowmobile asap and managed the situation. Less crowded than Gala so it’s much better.
You could rent your ski or snowboard equipment and clothes from nearby shop as on the resort it might be expensive."

"It's a very beginner friendly ski resort, lots of green line with different difficulty, and easy to difficult blue line to practice advance. Dragondola has a pretty view and different style course in Toshiro ski resort. You can get different level of restaurant cross all building. It's also easy to get from public transportation. Recommend for all the beginners especially for the first time skier/snowboarder. For middle/advance player you can choose others like Kagura ski resort."

Navigating Naeba's Terrain
The Dragondola, a massive gondola, is a highlight, connecting Naeba with the adjacent Tashiro Ski Resort. This allows visitors to experience a much larger area with diverse courses, from steep pitches to powder bowls, depending on conditions. The sheer size of the combined resorts means you can spend several days here and still discover new runs.
While Naeba caters well to beginners and intermediates, advanced skiers and snowboarders can find some challenging black diamond runs and off-piste opportunities, especially when conditions are favorable. It's always wise to check the resort's snow report and trail map for the most up-to-date information on open runs and conditions.
Getting to Naeba: The Journey Matters
Driving to Naeba is feasible, but it comes with significant considerations during the winter months. The roads leading to the resort can be snow-covered and icy, making snow tires an absolute necessity. A front-wheel-drive vehicle without snow tires is strongly discouraged and can be dangerous. Many travelers opt for the train and shuttle to avoid the stress and potential hazards of winter driving.
For those who prefer not to navigate public transport or driving, highway buses are also an option, often departing from major Tokyo stations directly to Naeba. These can be a convenient and cost-effective choice, though booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak season.
Value and Affordability at Naeba
The Prince Hotel, located conveniently at the base of the slopes, offers lodging that is significantly more affordable than comparable accommodations in many Western ski resorts. This proximity to the lifts adds to the convenience, making it an attractive option for families and those looking to maximize their time on the snow.
Beyond lift tickets and lodging, renting ski and snowboard equipment can also be managed cost-effectively. While on-resort rentals are available, many visitors find it more economical to rent gear from shops in nearby towns or before arriving at Naeba. This attention to budget-friendly options makes Naeba a popular choice for both domestic and international travelers seeking a high-quality ski experience without breaking the bank.
