What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are drawn to the Urasoe Art Museum for its unique architecture and the quality of its special exhibitions, which often feature captivating lacquerware and washi art. However, some find the permanent collection limited and the museum atmosphere a bit stiff due to vigilant staff. The affordable entry fee and friendly staff are noted positives.
"Attracted by the unusual outside architecture at last I had the opportunity to visit over the Culture Day weekend in 2025 and was surprised and delighted to see two special exhibitions ! One concerned the art of lacquer work : from antique to an excellent exhibition of modern lacquer. The other was a ‘washi’ exhibition of beautifully painted panels ….. there was also a collection of quilted products and handmade crafts. I hope more people come and appreciate this museum more as their schedule of exhibitions is shown on their website."

"The most interesting feature of this museum is the beautiful architecture of its building, which you can admire from outside. Unless you are a fanatic for lacquerware, the collection is very limited & quite boring. The guided audio tour would have been great if it provided additional info or interesting facts. But it simply reads the signs verbatim, which is already displayed in English. Each informational card is a very long paragraph that you can read much faster yourself than the audio does. It's pointless to use unless you have bad eyesight. There is a guard watching you in every room so the atmosphere is very stiff & uninviting. Again, I do not recommend unless you are super into the history of lacquer-ware."

"2025: Muzu exhibit is going on! Great place to see traveling exhibits. Signsnin English and Japanese. Free parking on site.

*fee is higher since this receive in 2020: GREAT little gem for historial art! 200¥ for entry fee! There is an English audio to follow through the art pieces. The staff were very friendly and helped guide to begin correctly when we got mixed up!
Note, parking in the front (on main road) is closer to the front door. The Google GPS takes you to the back of the building."
