Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Shedding House's incredibly unique and impressive carved woodwork, calling it one of the most distinctive accommodations they've ever experienced. The immersive 'shed skin' concept, down to the slippers, is a major highlight. While day access can be limited, overnight stays offer a profound artistic encounter. Some note practicalities like parking and potential autumn bugs.

"OMG we staying in this beautiful house, the most unique I've ever stayed! The woodwork is so impressive and lovely. I highly recommend visiting for your day when it's open or better yet spend the night!"

T Mart

"We visited during the day on a weekend. Please note that normally only guests staying overnight are allowed inside. It is said to be a collaboration with students from Nihon University's College of Art, and apparently they decided to dig the house so that everyone could immerse themselves in it and not get bored. Every corner of the house has been dug up, making it look like a house after it has shed its skin. Even the slippers in the house have a shed-skin design.
The soles of your feet feel fresh when walking on the floor. The bathrooms are relatively clean, so there are no particular inconveniences.
This area, like many other areas, apparently sees over 3m of snow, which gives you a sense of the harshness that only a snowy country can offer.
It is also close to the rice terraces of Hoshitoge, making it a good place to stay if you want to explore the surrounding area."

Tet Mat

"Please note that there are no parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of this building. It is an uphill slope from the parking space. I wish you the best. The amount of hand carving is also amazing. On the other hand, what caught my attention was the way the parts that were not carved by hand were highlighted."

The Art of Transformation: Shedding House

The Shedding House is more than just a building; it's a profound artistic statement. Collaboratively conceived with students from Nihon University's College of Art, the house has undergone a radical transformation. Its exterior and interior have been meticulously carved, giving the impression that the structure has literally 'shed its skin.' This unique concept invites visitors to immerse themselves in the art, blurring the lines between dwelling and sculpture. The sheer volume of hand carving is astonishing, showcasing incredible craftsmanship. Reddit

Beyond the visual spectacle, the experience is designed to be tactile. Even the slippers provided for guests feature a 'shed-skin' design, and walking on the floors is described as a fresh sensation. This attention to detail enhances the feeling of being part of the artwork. The contrast between the deeply carved sections and the parts left untouched also adds an interesting layer to the aesthetic, highlighting the process of transformation. Reddit

Located in a region known for its harsh snowy winters, with over 3 meters of snow accumulation, the Shedding House also offers a glimpse into the resilience and beauty of life in such environments. Its proximity to the famous Hoshitoge Rice Terraces makes it a compelling stop for those exploring the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale or the broader cultural landscape of the area. Reddit

Planning Your Visit: Practicalities

When planning a visit to the Shedding House, it's crucial to understand its dual nature as both an art installation and a unique accommodation. While day visits are possible, the most comprehensive experience is gained by staying overnight. This allows for full exploration of the interior and a deeper connection with the artwork. Due to its popularity, especially during art events, booking your overnight stay well in advance is highly recommended. Reddit

For those visiting during the day, be aware that access inside may be limited, as the primary function for interior access is for overnight guests. This means you might only be able to appreciate the exterior and its immediate surroundings. Parking is another consideration; there are no parking spaces directly at the house. Visitors will need to find parking nearby and be prepared for a walk, which can be uphill. Reddit

Additionally, depending on the season, visitors should be mindful of local conditions. Autumn, for instance, can bring an abundance of stink bugs, which might detract from the experience for some. Reddit The surrounding snowy landscape, a hallmark of the region, offers a stark beauty that complements the art, but also implies potential travel challenges during winter months. Researching local transport and weather conditions is advisable.
