Planning Your Visit

Timing is Key for Autumn Colors

Hananuki Gorge is most famous for its autumn foliage, typically peaking from mid-November to late November. Visiting during this time means experiencing the 'autumn leaf tunnel' effect. However, this peak season also brings significant crowds, especially during the limited-time night illumination event. Plan for early mornings or weekdays to avoid the heaviest influx of visitors.

Accessibility and Getting Around

While Hananuki Gorge is accessible by public transport (train to Takahagi Station, then a shuttle bus), many visitors opt for cars. Be aware that parking can be challenging during peak autumn season, with queues extending onto main roads. A free parking lot is available about 800 meters away, requiring a pleasant walk to the gorge. Consider the hilly terrain when planning your visit, especially if you have mobility concerns.

Reviews Summary

Hananuki Gorge is celebrated for its stunning autumn foliage, particularly the 'leaf tunnel' effect from its suspension bridge. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty and the serene atmosphere during off-peak times. However, the gorge can become extremely crowded during autumn, especially during evening illuminations, leading to parking and access challenges. Some find the bridge smaller than expected, but the overall natural setting is considered a pleasant escape.

"Beautiful place with opportunities to see the trees change color. We visited mid-November and the colors were amazing! The Shiomi Suspension Bridge was lit up at night and is one of the most picturesque things I've ever seen. You can walk along the road path or hike through. The hike was very beginner friendly, my kids were able to do it with no problems. I highly recommend seeing this place in Autumn."

Samantha Brisolara

"Autumn gets really packed especially with the autumn light up event! They have started to hold the annually autumn event where there are stalls and light up. The evening during the autumn light up is extremely crowded. Cars would be queuing right out to the main road outside. The lines would start even in the morning before 10 am. Use a bus or get there really early to reach the main parking spot. Otherwise, you will have to park your car at other parking areas far away. Walking might not really a problem because the area is certainly scenic but it is a hilly area.

However, do not expect postcard scenic unless you are a really good photographer. For 19 Nov 2022, the bridge area have started to lose its leaves but some are still green. There are still many trees still in magnificent autumn foliage though. Area wise it is a nature reserve with hiking paths and camping sites. It is definitely a nice place to walk about and explore nature. Met a cat at the waterfall/campsite area. Hope it is doing fine.

Since the area is very close to other autumn spots like Fukuroda Falls and the Ryujin Ohashi, it is worth spending a day in the area. There are also several apple orchards nearby."

"Beautiful place. The gorge itself was very quiet when we went. A nice place to relax and enjoy some down time. Lots of rocks to walk around on and the water pool would be nice to swim in during summer. The small wooden suspension bridge that passes over the gorge is nice and the acers there will be a nice view during autumn."
