✨I’m on a quest to visit all the 23 wards in Tokyo and unravel the beauty in each ward✨ 📍4 of 23 wards: Suginami (杉並) Omiya Hachimangu Shrine (大宮八幡宮) in Suginami-ku is known to be the 3rd largest shrine in Tokyo. It is believed that the shrine was first founded in 1063. I’ve visited many shrines in Japan but this is definitely one of my favorite walk from the Torii (鳥居) to the main shrine. ⛩ 📷...

This shrine was really nice and on a weekday it was practically empty. It also happens to sit in a much larger parkland which is like an oasis of suburbia. .

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Omiya Hachimangu for its serene atmosphere, beautiful natural surroundings, and vibrant cultural events. Many appreciate the spacious grounds and the opportunity to witness traditional practices like archery and festival processions. While some find it a bit out of the way for a dedicated trip, it's considered a worthwhile visit, especially for those staying nearby or seeking a peaceful urban oasis.

"I visit every time I stay nearby, sometimes multiple times on a trip. It is a lovely temple with a park nearby. There are constantly things going on here and it's always worthwhile stopping in.

On this trip over golden week, there was a sword demonstration, a drum concert, children's day, and some other event that I couldn't figure out.

During festivals, food and games are available. You can get some water and use the toilets here at other times. There is Japanese archery here as well and you can see it on the right on the temple. I have never been inside of the archery house, so I just rewatch from outside. Not sure if they welcome people inside.

I love early morning here as it is truly beautiful. It might be worth a special trip to some, but I don't think it is so special that it would be worth a medium to long journey (>30 minutes).

Make sure you visit the nearby park, there is radio exercises every morning at 0630. From the temple, leave via the exit to right, cross over the river and walk about 15 minutes to the right. It takes place in one of the playgrounds. You will see people starting to gather around 0620 or so."

"WoW! Amazing Shinto Shrine. Long approach walk and many Tori gates. Well kept and popular with many residents. Well worth a visit."

"One of the largest shrines in the area so you're bound to visit at some point, either for the first shrine visit of the new year or outside of peak visiting hours.

I celebrated the New Year of 2023 here and had to visit again at the end of 2024 while it was still less crowded.
Definitely recommend a visit!"
