"Located near Narita Airport, it's a little inconvenient to get to, but I think the Kofun Museum is well worth a visit. While the museum is small, it boasts a rich collection of exhibits, focusing on various haniwa (handiwa) excavated from ancient tumuli in Shibayama-machi, Chiba Prefecture, many of which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. For kofun enthusiasts, a visit of at least 1.5 hours is recommended. The subtle changes in expression on each haniwa are fascinating.

It's easier to understand the Tonozuka and Himezuka tumuli after visiting the museum. Fortunately, I did my research beforehand, so I wasn't completely lost when I arrived at the tumuli. The museum also sells tumuli seals! If you're looking to collect them, be sure to buy one here."

"This is a must-see museum for haniwa lovers.
There are many haniwa on display, all of which are easy to see and understand.
The hand puppet guides provide entertaining commentary, making it a fun museum to look around.
There are many more excavated haniwa on display than I expected, and I was surprised at the wide variety and shapes of haniwa that existed. They are displayed in an easy-to-see manner, ranging from large to small. Many of the pieces must have been difficult to restore, making this a museum well worth seeing.
It feels more like a gift shop than a museum shop. I felt the realistic replicas of the items were a good deal.
By the way, there are many more haniwa along the Haniwa Highway on the way here. They are lined up in the plaza in front of the museum. There is also a haniwa totem pole, so you can enter the museum in an excited mood."

The Fascinating World of Haniwa

These figures range from simple cylinders to elaborate representations of humans, animals, and houses. The museum's collection highlights the subtle changes in expression on each haniwa, revealing the artistry and craftsmanship of the period. Many of the pieces on display are designated as Important Cultural Properties, underscoring their historical and artistic significance. Reddit

Visitors often express surprise at the wide variety and shapes of haniwa that existed. The museum also provides basic knowledge about haniwa, ancient tombs, and the lifestyles of the people who created them, offering a comprehensive look into this aspect of Japanese history. Reddit

Beyond the individual haniwa, the museum contextually places them within the broader understanding of kofun culture. It explains the excavation work and the geographical distribution of these ancient burial mounds, particularly in the southern Kanto region, challenging the common perception that kofun are solely a Kansai phenomenon. This educational aspect enhances the appreciation of the haniwa as windows into the past. Reddit
