"Good place to understand the local history"

"I visited here first thing in the morning in early August, during the scorching heat of over 30 degrees Celsius. It was a 2-3 minute walk from Wakaba Ryokan, where I had stayed the night before.
It was just after the museum opened at 9am, so there were hardly any customers yet, and I was able to tour the museum quietly. The spacious interior was a little cool, despite the scorching heat outside.
When I paid the entrance fee and tried to go inside, a woman first gave me a brief explanation of the history and origins of the museum.
It was a store and residence of Abumiya, a shipping wholesaler in Sakata that supported shipping on the Japan Sea during the Edo period. It was very interesting to see the large number of rooms, kitchens, courtyards, storehouses, and other exhibits using dolls so that you can get a good idea of the life of Sakata merchants at the time.
Rakugo often features scenes and descriptions of merchants' homes in the Edo period, and it was an unexpected blessing for me as a Rakugo fan to be able to experience it in person.
It is said that the set of the servant's place of employment in the classic NHK morning drama "Oshin" was modeled after Abumiya. It was also used in the filming of the movie "Oshin," and there were related exhibits."
