"2025/6/4
I've always wanted to visit this castle ruin. Finally, I'm here. It's amazing how they built so many enclosures and stone walls on such a high, sharp mountain ridge. The stone walls are higher than Azuchi Castle and look very elaborate. Is it really necessary to build something this big on such a high mountain during the Sengoku period? Then I thought, wasn't there a huge temple here in later times? If so, there must be some legend about it. You need money to enter this mountain. First, it costs 500 yen to drive up the mountain path, and 700 yen to enter Kannonshoji Temple.
After driving up the mountain path, paying at the toll booth and going for a while, you will see the castle entrance on your left, and you can park your car about 50 meters away. I recommend climbing from this entrance in the order of Oishigaki, Ikedamaru, Hiraimaru, and Honmaru. I climbed up to Kannonshoji Temple, then went down the mountain from around Inari Shrine behind the temple, went to the same entrance, and then climbed the mountain again, which was quite tough."

"The easiest way to get there is to drive to Kannonshoji Temple's parking lot (the front side is recommended if you're only interested in the main area, but the back side is recommended if you want to see everything). It costs 600 yen for the toll road and 500 yen for visiting the temple, but think of it as environmental conservation and management. If you walk from the base, it's free, but it's more like a hiking excursion if you bring a packed lunch. The temple was founded by Prince Shotoku, so it's worth seeing.
If you come from the front, ask the temple reception for directions to the castle ruins.
The highlight is from the remains of the main castle to around the large stone wall. There are only stone walls and earthen ramparts, no buildings.
The view from the top of Joroiwa Rock and the large stone wall is beautiful."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Kannonji Castle

Kannonji Castle, a significant mountain fortress, was the stronghold of the Omi Sasaki Rokkaku clan. Its strategic location on a steep mountain ridge allowed for formidable defenses. The castle's history is marked by its surrender to Oda Nobunaga in 1568 during the Battle of Kannonji Castle, a pivotal moment that led to the clan's downfall. Following its surrender, the castle was largely abandoned, but its impressive stone walls and earthworks remain as a testament to its past glory. Reddit

Interestingly, Oda Nobunaga is said to have modeled his grand Azuchi Castle after the defensive principles and architectural style of Kannonji Castle. This connection highlights the castle's importance in Japanese military architecture of the Sengoku period. The remnants today, primarily the extensive stone walls and ramparts, offer a glimpse into the sophisticated defensive strategies employed during that era. Reddit

While no buildings remain, the sheer scale of the stone construction on such challenging terrain is awe-inspiring. Visitors can trace the outlines of the various enclosures and imagine the lives of those who defended this mountain stronghold. The historical narrative adds a profound layer to the physical exploration of the ruins. Reddit

Exploring the Castle Ruins: A Hiker's Guide

The exploration of Kannonji Castle Ruins is akin to a rewarding hike. Visitors are advised to start from the Kannonshoji Temple parking lot, which provides access to the main castle areas. A recommended route involves ascending through Oishigaki, Ikedamaru, Hiraimaru, and finally reaching Honmaru, the main citadel. This path allows for a comprehensive experience of the castle's layout and defensive features. Reddit

For those seeking a more challenging and free experience, hiking from the base of the mountain is an option. This route is significantly more demanding and requires good physical condition and preparedness, including packed food and water. The journey from the base offers a different perspective and a greater sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit. Reddit

Throughout the climb, be mindful of the terrain, which can be steep and uneven. Sturdy hiking shoes are a must. Keep an eye out for natural hazards, such as reported beehives near the large stone wall, and always stay on marked paths where available. The effort is rewarded with stunning views and a deep appreciation for the castle's construction. Reddit
