Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awed by the breathtaking scenery of Takase Dam, particularly the striking emerald green lake set against majestic mountains. While the journey can be challenging due to access restrictions and the need for transfers or a significant walk, the spectacular views and its role as a gateway to serious mountain climbing make it a highly rewarding destination for nature lovers and adventurers.

"It has a gorgeous view of the valley. I went mid October and it was still too early for the autumn leaves, but I hear this is one of the best in Japan, next to Kurobe dam. Seeing that Kurobe dam is next to it and on the same mountain range, I am not surprised.

Access is rather not easy. Drive/shuttle to Nanakura Sanso and then walk/taxi (jpy2600 one way) to here."

"Very nice place. Went up on Segway, walked the last part of the road, there were no people at all!"

"Visited on August 16, 2025. There was no one waiting at the shared taxi stand at Nanakura Gate, so I decided to walk the 5.3km one way to Takase Dam and back. It took about an hour and 20 minutes each way.
The Yamanokami Tunnel has some lights so it's not pitch black, but the sidewalk is narrow and cars pass by about every 15 minutes, so it can be quite scary. I also passed about three hikers.
There were several beautiful mountain streams along the way, and the cool air was pleasant.
As for whether I'd walk again, I'd prefer to take a shared taxi next time."

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Takase Dam offers a visually stunning experience with its emerald green lake and dramatic mountain scenery, which can captivate older children. However, the journey itself presents challenges for families. The need to transfer to a taxi or undertake a long walk (5.3km) with narrow tunnel sections might be difficult for very young children or those with mobility issues. Reddit

If you do visit, consider the taxi option for a quicker and more comfortable journey. Pack plenty of snacks and water, as amenities at the dam are likely limited. The sheer scale of the dam and the natural beauty can be educational, but parents should be mindful of safety around the water and the dam structure. It's best suited for families with older children who can appreciate the landscape and handle the travel involved.

Navigating the Journey to Takase Dam

Reaching Takase Dam is an adventure in itself, requiring careful planning. Regular vehicles are prohibited from entering the dam area, necessitating a transfer. Visitors typically drive or take a shuttle to Nanakura Sanso, from where they can opt for a special taxi service to the dam. This taxi service is a significant convenience, though it comes at a cost of approximately ¥2600 one way. For the more adventurous or budget-conscious traveler, the 5.3km walk from Nanakura Gate is a viable alternative. This trek takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes each way and offers a more intimate experience with the surrounding nature. However, it's important to be prepared for a narrow sidewalk within the Yamanokami Tunnel, where occasional car traffic can be a concern. Reddit

Travelers have noted that while the tunnel has some lighting, the path can feel precarious. The journey is punctuated by beautiful mountain streams and pleasant cool air, making the walk rewarding for those who choose it. Despite the scenic aspects, many who have walked express a preference for the taxi on future visits due to the tunnel's conditions and the overall effort. It's also crucial to be aware of the limited mobile phone reception along the route and at the dam itself, so downloading offline maps or informing someone of your itinerary is advisable. Reddit

The Majestic Scenery of Takase Dam

Takase Dam is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, offering a dramatic juxtaposition of human engineering and raw alpine wilderness. The most striking feature is the emerald green lake that fills the reservoir, a vibrant hue that contrasts sharply with the rugged, steep mountains surrounding it. This visual spectacle is a major draw for visitors, providing a stunning backdrop for photography and contemplation. The dam itself is a colossal structure, a testament to the engineering prowess required to harness the power of the mountains. Reddit

Beyond the immediate dam area, the views extend to a gorgeous valley, offering panoramic vistas that change with the seasons. While mid-October might be a bit early for the full glory of autumn leaves, the area is celebrated as one of Japan's premier spots for fall colors, often compared to the famous Kurobe Dam. For the best experience of vibrant foliage, late October to early November is generally recommended. The crisp mountain air and the serene atmosphere contribute to a truly immersive natural experience, making it a worthwhile destination even with the access challenges. Reddit

Takase Dam as a Mountain Climbing Hub

For seasoned mountaineers, Takase Dam serves as a critical access point to some of the most challenging and rewarding peaks in the Northern Alps. It is a key starting point for the Uraginza traverse course, a multi-day trek that includes ascents of formidable mountains such as Mt. Noguchigoro and Mt. Eboshi. This region is less frequented than other parts of the Hida Mountains, offering a more remote and less crowded mountaineering experience. Reddit

The popularity of Japan's '100 Famous Mountains' has led to an increase in visitors to these less-trodden paths, but it still remains a destination for those seeking a serious alpine challenge. Routes to the summits vary, and during the snow season, specialized equipment like crampons and ice axes are essential, particularly at higher altitudes. The remoteness means that planning, preparation, and an understanding of alpine conditions are paramount for anyone intending to climb from Takase Dam. Reddit
