"Very informative, staff were helpful and knowledgeable"

Yves Al-Ghazi

"I came across the unassuming Tensan Center while strolling around. It left me with a wonderful feeling.

I highly recommend this place to anyone with a curiosity for new things.

There are two types of silkworms: domesticated and wild silkworms, and this center preserves the wild silkworm culture in Hotaka, despite its rise and fall.

In a 15-minute video, I learned that it takes a year of painstaking manual work to harvest wild silkworm thread.

Who knew they would molt five times!

The staff's explanation was fun, and the vibrant green thread was stunning.

I also heard you can try your hand at hand-weaving coasters.

I'd like to stop by again."

"After getting interested in the cuteness of adult silkworm moths and doing some research, I visited the Tensan Center for the first time.

To my shame, I had mistakenly thought that Tensan was a silkworm moth, and I had never learned that it was different from domesticated silkworms.

The commonly known silkworm moth (domestic silkworm) produces white thread, but the Yamamayuga (Tensan silkworm) at the Tensan Center produces beautiful green thread.

I also learned for the first time that silkworm moths feed on mulberry leaves and have been completely domesticated over a history of about 5,000 years, so they are unable to survive in the wild, whereas Yamamayuga mainly feed on leaves of oak trees and other plants, and can survive in the wild without relying on human intervention.

Because I had researched domesticated silkworms (Bombyx mori), I was able to understand the difference between them and Tensan, and it was a very meaningful experience.

There is a 15-minute DVD screening, and I recommend watching it as it is very easy to understand.

The staff were also friendly and very polite, and I was also able to tour the workshop, so it was a very rewarding time.

I heard that they were looking for volunteers for various processes, so I registered as I wanted to try it out.

They also have an exhibition and sale of crafts, so if you're in the area, why not stop by?

By the way, someone happened to be weaving bolts of cloth in the workshop, and when I asked them, they told me that it takes about 12 months from design to completion!!

They said that they love weaving, and that they can forget about everything else while they are weaving and become immersed in the work, but I felt that creating crafts is also philosophical.

I'll go and visit again before the bolts of cloth are finished!"
