Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by Higashizaki Cape's unique blend of dramatic natural beauty and poignant WWII history. The island's secluded atmosphere and friendly locals add to its charm, though some note limited services and the need for advance planning. It's a destination that offers both breathtaking scenery and a profound historical narrative.

"Totally fascinating place. I used to go there in February to escape downtown Tokyo. The place is highly unusual in that, it sits in the same ward as Tokyo so is well funded with proper pavement and a city bus that circles the island over and over with no riders. What is really interesting is, there is a rusty radio tower laying down the side of the volcano in the middle of the island; this tower was bombed during the war and it was just sort of left there. There are indeed war relics all over the place. You will see pill boxes dotting the volcano, occasionally unexploded ordinances laying around in the jungle, and even a crashed warplane (which I heard has been removed.) The locals are super friendly, though there are only 300 of them. Far cry from locals' attitude during the war. The island was not nicknamed "cannibal island" for nothing. A long and fascinating history, it was even a bombing target of George Busch Senior, whose plane was shot down. 9 of his crew were captured and eaten by Imperial soldiers and Busch was the soul survivor who escaped, being rescued by an American submarine last minute. As if all this isn't interesting enough, there are giant whales jumping in and an out of the sea on a regular basis. The place is strange beyond words, go check it out for yourself!"
