What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking, almost otherworldly views from Ochiishi Cape, describing it as the 'edge of the world.' The remote location and sparse crowds contribute to a sense of solitude and natural wonder. However, some find the boardwalk challenging and note the lack of facilities, suggesting it's best for those prepared for a walk in a wild, undeveloped area.
"[Ochiishi Cape]
A cape jutting out into the Pacific Ocean from the base of the Nemuro Peninsula.
Special Natural Monument
When the Dutch explorer Vries visited Nemuro in 1643, he spotted Ochiishi Cape and named it "Cape Manshooft" (Human Head), introducing it to the world.
While the coastline of Ochiishi Cape is dominated by sheer cliffs approximately 50 meters high, the inland area is a flat plateau, home to the Ochiishi Cape Marsh, a pure forest of Sakhalin spruce.
A walking trail leads to the tip of the cape, and the surrounding area is also known as the Sphagnum Moss Marsh.
In 1930, Sakai azalea, a plant native to Sakhalin and the Kamchatka Peninsula, was discovered in the Ochiishi Cape Marsh.
As it is located near the easternmost tip of Hokkaido, the Ochiishi Cape Lighthouse serves as a significant landmark for ships sailing across the Pacific Ocean.
In 1994, the Ochiishi Cape Station of the National Institute for Environmental Studies' Center for Global Environmental Research was constructed, conducting meteorological observations and collecting, separating, and measuring atmospheric gases.
Since October 1995, the cape has been monitoring carbon dioxide concentrations and atmospheric trace elements, which are believed to be related to global warming, and publishing the data.
As the cape is an environmental conservation area, vehicles are prohibited from entering. Instead, you must park at the curb and walk along the approximately 2km boardwalk.
It truly is the edge of the world.
A place that truly makes you feel like you've arrived in Hokkaido.
A must-see before you die.
The road is well maintained, but be careful as it involves quite a bit of walking.

"I visited in November 2018. You'll be driving on an unpaved road from partway through, so be careful of boulders. It's only accessible by car, but there's no parking lot, so you'll have to park near the end of the road. Along the way, they were building an impressive solar power plant, and I thought it would be great if they built a parking lot there, considering they have such a wonderful tourist attraction.
After parking, it's about a 20-minute walk to the tip of the cape. Walk along the plank path made of half-cut logs. It's a lovely path with a lot of character, but it's not a very clean or easy path, so it may be difficult for elderly people or those with mobility issues. Be careful.
The view was breathtaking, beyond words."

"Before I knew it, a new spot had appeared at Ochiishi Cape.
I previously commented on Ochiishi Cape Lighthouse, but since everyone has been rating and commenting on Ochiishi Cape itself in their posts about the boardwalk and lighthouse, I thought I should write about Ochiishi Cape as a whole here.
I've been here twice, but I hardly met any other people.
It has a slightly spooky atmosphere at dawn and dusk, so it feels a bit dangerous to go alone.
Of course, those are the times when you can see some amazing views, so I'd like to go with a group if possible."
