Reviews Summary

Maya Falls offers a beautiful natural escape with a moderate hike and the allure of local legend. While the falls themselves are impressive, the real draw for some is the adventurous canyoning down the Hinatami River. Visitors should be prepared for the mountain trail and be mindful of leeches.

"October 13, 2023: Canyoning on the Hinatami River from Maya Falls to Oizumi Falls! Members (Gin, Jima, Yusuke, Kaito)
From the Shima River Dam side, we walked about 30 minutes from the trailhead, just to the right after passing through the Okushima Tunnel. We entered the river about 10 minutes upstream from the Maya Falls Observation Deck at 10:00 AM (Photo 1). We rappelled over a 6-meter waterfall (Photo 2) and reached the top of Maya Falls (Photo 3). Deciding it was impossible to descend through the current, we anchored ourselves on a tree to the right of the waterfall (Photo 4). Be careful of falling rocks, as there are many loose rocks! The waterfall basin is quite impressive (Photo 5). At 12:00 PM, we saw an interesting waterfall with a large fallen tree in the middle. We slid down the tree using the rappel in the first half (Photo 6.7). The erosion control dam in the video has an overhanging backside, so be careful! (8) We descended several small waterfalls using sliders and jumps (9.10) and reached the top of Koizumi Falls (11). This waterfall is about 8m high and the basin is deep, so one person rappelled down while the rest of the group enjoyed jumping (12). At 14:30, the river merges with the Shima River, and Oizumi Falls is located close to the Shima River side, so we climbed up the stream a little and played around (13). The water quality on the Shima River side is different, it's blue and very beautiful! You can get to the paved road from the left of the basin. 15:00 We left the valley."

"Shima Onsen is home to the legend of Princess Maya, who is even the motif for a local mascot character. The legend goes something like this:

A childless couple prayed to the Medicine Buddha and took a therapeutic bath at Shima Onsen.

They named their daughter Maya, and she grew into a beautiful young woman known as Princess Maya.

Princess Maya visited the waterfall after receiving a message in a dream from Fudo Myo-o, and met and married a young man who was chasing chamois.

Yes.

No Cinderella feel at all. She was simply born and married normally.

Maya Falls is said to be the place where Princess Maya and the young man met, but to reach it you need to walk about 30 minutes along the promenade, and there is no parking lot near the trailhead. Access by car will likely be difficult. The waterfall itself is just as impressive as Princess Maya's life, and is modest in appearance. I wouldn't say it's a waste of time, but I don't particularly recommend it either. Although it's called a walking trail, it is quite a mountain path, so you'll need comfortable shoes and, in the summer, clothes you don't mind sweating in.
At Hinatami Yakushi, located near the trailhead, there is a Yakushi Nyorai statue enshrined in the Yakushi Hall, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and Acala in a small shrine to the right."

"Anyway, be careful of mountain leeches during this time of year. They are swarming everywhere. The waterfall itself is cool and negative ions are felt, but the leeches were bothering me."
