Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the mystical atmosphere of Togakushi Shrine, particularly the iconic cedar-lined path to Okusha. The challenging hikes, including the thrilling Ari-no-Towatari ridge, are a major draw for adventurers. While the natural beauty and spiritual ambiance are widely praised, some find the more difficult sections daunting.

"It was a mountain I had always wanted to climb. It's a mountain with many chain sections, so it's a thrilling experience. The next day, I had muscle pain in my upper body lol

I definitely don't recommend it for beginners or those who are not confident. I took out mountaineering insurance and wore a helmet, but no one was wearing one on the day I climbed. The wind was strong on the day I climbed, so it was a little scary. I'm glad I brought my helmet. I hope there will be fewer accidents when crossing the Ant Tower.

The path is well maintained and easy to climb. Thank you to the people who manage the mountain."

今川

"A wonderful mountain with an incredible summit and several steep climbs with chains ❤️
Good shoes are a must."

Artur Grzegorzek

"I like it so much that I climbed it three weeks in a row.

Steep climbs, rocky areas, chain sections,
and crossing an ant tower where you would die if you fell to the left.

It's a fun hiking trail with lots of variety,
but I wouldn't recommend it at all to people who aren't good at rocky areas (laughs)."

The Mystical Togakushi Shrine Complex

Togakushi Shrine is not a single entity but a collection of five main shrines scattered across Mount Togakushi: Okusha (Upper Shrine), Hokosha (Treasure Shrine), Chusha (Central Shrine), Zensha (Front Shrine), and Shimonsha (Lower Shrine). The most iconic and frequently visited is Okusha, renowned for its approach through a majestic avenue of ancient cedar trees, some estimated to be over 400 years old.TikTok This path creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere, drawing comparisons to scenes from anime like Demon Slayer.TikTok+1 The journey to Okusha is a spiritual experience in itself, offering a sense of peace and connection with nature.

The history of Togakushi is deeply intertwined with Japanese mythology, particularly the legend of Amaterasu, the sun goddess. Visitors often describe the feeling of stepping into a sacred realm, a place where myth and nature converge.TikTokInstagram

While the walk to Okusha is accessible, reaching the summit of Mount Togakushi involves more strenuous hiking. The trail becomes increasingly challenging with steep ascents, rocky sections, and exposed chain climbs, culminating in the notorious Ari-no-Towatari (Ant Tower Crossing) ridge. This section requires significant caution and is best suited for experienced hikers with a good head for heights.Reddit The diverse experiences, from serene forest walks to challenging climbs, make Togakushi a multifaceted destination.

Hiking Mount Togakushi: Trails and Challenges
