What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Iwate Museum of Art for its serene atmosphere, minimalist architecture, and the rare opportunity for quiet, uncrowded art appreciation. Many enjoy the focus on local artists and the affordable admission. Some visitors have noted that not all exhibitions may be open on their visit day, which can limit the experience.
"A truly relaxing experience. The space was nearly empty during my visit, making it feel like a private viewing of their well-curated collection. The minimalist design of the museum keeps the focus on the art, creating a calm and unhurried atmosphere.
If you prefer quiet, thoughtful art appreciation, this museum is a perfect choice. Highly recommended for those who want to enjoy art at their own pace."

"It was a surreal experience to have the gallery all to myself, albeit with the mindful staff still in attendance. Unfortunately I came on a day where there was only one exhibition open (perhaps that is why it was completely empty). Despite the special exhibition not being to my taste, the privilege to set my own pace and really admire the pieces, with no worries of blocking others allowed me to enjoy it nonetheless, I wish that the other exhibitions were open so I could enjoy the museum to its full extent with this uncommon quietness.
I was only stopping by Morioka for half a day on my road-trip around Tohoku, but I am seriously considering shifting my schedule just so I can enjoy the museum in its entirety."

"Taking a break from snowboarding, I wanted to experience something completely different—so I visited this calm and inspiring space.
The museum’s brutalist architecture is both serene and powerful, setting the perfect tone for appreciating art. The staff were incredibly friendly and informative, making the visit even more enjoyable.
The highlight for me was the temporary exhibition featuring Itaru Hirama, showcasing his striking portrait photography of artists from the 1990s to today. I was so captivated that I picked up one of his photobooks the moment I stepped out!"
