Reviews Summary

Mount Nokogiri offers a unique blend of natural beauty and spiritual sites, with the thrilling 'Hell Peek' being a major draw. Visitors praise the spectacular views and the impressive Buddha statue, but caution strongly about the steep, numerous stairs and uneven terrain, recommending sturdy footwear and ample water. Some reviewers noted potential issues with closed paths or missed trains, advising careful planning. Reddit

"Plenty more to see here than just the View. Would allow minimum 2 hours as there are a lot of ups and downs and, depending on fitness, could take a while.

Would recommend parking at the East entrance free lot. Then you can make your way up to the top and you finish on the down. The ropeway from the North takes you somewhat to the top, but for the Daibutsu statue, you’re going to have to hike back up to get back to the cable car.

¥700 entrance fee to the ‘park’ for adults, well worth it."

Billy Roberts

"If you take the ropeway up to here the journey is not bad. In truth, we waited in line longer to get pictures from the lookout than trekking. There are points that can be difficult, but overall beautiful!"

Anthony Traylor

"It takes quite a bit step hike, but part of a journey (to the top of the mountain) can be done by a rope way or there are 2 parking places as well.
Magnificent views of a Chiba coast, highway and thick carpet of a forest"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Thrill of Jigoku Nozoki

The 'Jigoku Nozoki,' or 'Hell Peek,' is arguably the most talked-about feature of Mount Nokogiri. This narrow, rocky outcrop juts out from the cliff face, offering a dizzying perspective of the sheer drop below and the expansive Tokyo Bay in the distance. Visitors describe the experience as both terrifying and exhilarating, a true test for those with a fear of heights. Reddit While the views are spectacular, the footing is uneven, and handrails are essential for safety. Many reviewers emphasize the importance of wearing appropriate footwear and being mindful of every step to avoid accidents. Reddit

The sense of accomplishment after reaching and standing on this precarious ledge is immense, according to many who have dared to venture out. It's a spot that truly lives up to its name, providing a memorable, adrenaline-pumping experience for adventurous travelers. Remember to secure your belongings, especially your phone, if you plan to capture this daring moment. Reddit

Exploring Nihon-ji Temple's Sacred Sites

Beyond the thrill of Jigoku Nozoki, Mount Nokogiri is home to the historic Nihon-ji Temple, founded in the 8th century. The temple's most prominent feature is the Daibutsu (Great Buddha), a colossal stone statue carved directly into the mountainside. It's recognized as the largest stone Buddha in Japan and is a truly awe-inspiring sight that commands reverence. Reddit

Adding to the temple's spiritual atmosphere are the 1500 Rakan statues. These stone sculptures represent disciples of Buddha, each carved with unique expressions and postures. They were originally created during the Edo period but were damaged during an anti-Buddhist movement. The painstaking restoration efforts have brought these expressive figures back to life, creating a fascinating and somewhat somber procession along the temple paths. Reddit

Visitors often recommend taking your time to wander through the temple grounds, appreciating the blend of natural beauty and religious artistry. The paths leading to these sites involve significant climbing, so comfortable shoes are a must. Reddit

Navigating the Mountain Trails

The ascent and descent on Mount Nokogiri are characterized by numerous steep stairs and uneven, rocky paths. While the Mount Nokogiri Ropeway provides a convenient way to reach a higher elevation, exploring the temple and the summit viewpoints requires a good amount of walking and climbing. Reddit Hikers often describe the climb as challenging but rewarding, with the natural scenery providing a beautiful backdrop. It's important to be prepared for a physical workout, especially if you plan to visit all the key attractions. Reddit

For those who prefer a more strenuous hike, there are routes that start from the base of the mountain, taking approximately 60-70 minutes to reach the top. Along the way, you might find vending machines and benches, offering brief respites. Reddit However, it's always best to carry your own water and snacks, as facilities can be sparse on the trails. The terrain demands sturdy footwear to prevent slips and ankle injuries. Reddit
