"Interesting place to visit near lake Akan. Watch the nature amazing creations of mud volcano which is always around 100DegC and snow is never deposited here. "There are several short nature paths to get to this spot and the 5☆ review is for these paths. Each path is about 10~20min one way. I took the lake side path on the way and the middle path (shortest) back to the visitor's centre."

"Fantastic walk to bokke. Its probably the timing that we went. There are very few people around. This is taken in early feb.

The hike there is a short one amid the thick layer of snow. But its nothing a hiking boot cant handle. A perfect nice quite walk listening to the nearby birds and wildlife.

The mud volcano is very interesting and bubbly. You can hear it from my video. As you get closer, the sulphur smell gets stronger but its not too bad compared to mt lo.

At the same park area, i think it offers the best view of lake akan. Just at the corner you can see where the hot spring waters flows into the lake with steam still gushing out.

Overall its super peaceful and beautiful."

The Unique Geology of Bokke

Bokke, meaning 'boiling up' in the Ainu language, is a fascinating example of a mud volcano. Unlike typical volcanoes that erupt lava, mud volcanoes spew mud, water, and gases. The heat source for Bokke is believed to be magma chambers deep underground, which heat groundwater and mix with subterranean gases to create the characteristic bubbling mud. This geothermal activity maintains a temperature around 100°C, which is why snow never accumulates in the immediate vicinity of the active vents. Instagram

This constant geothermal activity also supports a unique microclimate, allowing for the survival of plant species that typically thrive in warmer conditions. These special plants are a significant part of the ecosystem around Bokke, and barricades have been erected to protect them for research purposes, highlighting the scientific interest in this natural phenomenon. Reddit

The presence of sulphur is a common characteristic of geothermal areas, and Bokke is no exception. While the smell can be strong up close, it's a testament to the ongoing geological processes. Visitors often note that the smell is bearable and part of the authentic experience of visiting an active volcanic site. Reddit

These trails, each approximately 10 to 20 minutes in length, wind through the serene, snow-covered forests surrounding Lake Akan.
