【Day 3: Immersing in Ainu Culture】 Lake Akan Ainu Kotan is one of my favorite places to dive deep into the Ainu culture of Eastern Hokkaido. “Kotan” means village in the Ainu language, and we stayed a night in this small, welcoming hamlet. Wandering through the village, we chatted with the Ainu residents, often found carving beautiful wooden crafts in their shops. I couldn’t resist picking up a ...

Only have 3 hours to explore due to bus tour restrictions.

It is so beautiful and magical.

There is trekking path that provide some of the most stunning angle in this area. Look at the map from thw tourist center to find it.

If possible stay there for at least 2 nights, totally worth it.

If my stock rise by as much as 50% i will definitely visit Hokkaido again and stay at Lake Akan for 1 week. Thats how much i love this place.

Though i recommend you to bring food from 7-eleven, most food in this area taste kinda bland"

"Great experience! A lake with some volcanic geological traces. We took a walk around part of the lake, it is really pleasant. Snow, sulphuric air, mud, frozen lake, and some snow blizzard, all combined to unforgettable experience."

"Lake Akan is home to the Marimo Algae balls.
I came here during mid of Dec. If you would like to escape from overwhelming tourist, come to Lake Akan.

If early winter spend max 2 days here. i went to the Ainu village, shopped for souvenirs, had Ainu lunch, walked the trails to see bokke boiling mud and soaked in Onsen.

During summer the trails to the mountains are opened and one can go for hikes. Or during winter when the lake is totally frozen, winter activities will be held on frozen Akanko."

Winter Wonders of Lake Akan

Lake Akan transforms into a magical winter wonderland, offering unique experiences not found elsewhere. One of the most captivating sights is the frost flowers, delicate ice crystals that form on the lake's surface when specific conditions are met: a frozen lake without snow and sub-zero temperatures. These ephemeral beauties are a rare natural phenomenon, typically appearing from December to March. Instagram

When the lake is fully frozen, it becomes a playground for winter activities. Visitors can enjoy ice fishing, or simply walk across the vast expanse of ice, experiencing the serene, snow-covered landscape. The contrast between the stark white snow, the deep blue of the sky, and the surrounding evergreen forests creates a breathtaking panorama. InstagramReddit

Even with the cold, the Onsen (hot springs) remain a major draw, offering a warm respite and stunning views of the winter scenery. Staying at a lakeside resort allows for easy access to both the natural beauty and the comforting warmth of the hot springs. Instagram+1

Geothermal Activity and Volcanic Origins

Lake Akan is a caldera lake, formed within the crater of an active volcano. This geological origin is evident in the surrounding geothermal areas, such as the Bokke. Here, you can witness the earth's raw power through bubbling mud pools and steaming vents, a constant reminder of the volcanic forces at play beneath the surface. Reddit

The presence of these geothermal features contributes to the unique atmosphere of Lake Akan, with a faint scent of sulfur often present in the air. These areas are easily accessible via walking trails, allowing visitors to safely observe the natural phenomena. The volcanic activity also plays a role in the lake's ecosystem, contributing to its unique characteristics. Reddit
