Reigando is the cave where me Moto Musashi wrote the book of five rings during the last two years of his life. He died in 1645 of heart failure at the age of 61. His last five years he was a guest of the Hosokawa clan. He spent most of his time studying and, practicing calligraphy and the tea ceremony. He may also done some teaching. #shoshinryu #musashi #reigando #kumamoto #budo #martialarts

"If you're into the history, this cave is worthwhile trip. It costs 300 yen to enter and the gentleman there was very kind and helpful. It's a very peaceful area with great history. Be prepared to walk a while from the bus stop if you don't have a car. Also, the busses only go every couple of hours so a taxi may be needed. It is well worth the trip to get there."

"If you are into history and know about Miyamoto Musashi, this cave is a must visit. It is small but gorgeous.
However, be aware that the cave is quite far from Kumamoto Station and the bus is hard to reach and time. I went by taxi and on my way back I met Chris from US who offered to drive my back to Kumamoto Station. Thanks again Chris! Should you ever come to Zurich, let me know, I will show you around."

"Wonderful serene place with a cool history to it. Please be sure to read up on it first. There are a few spots to see and it was very quiet and beautiful.

The area is great for hiking but I had no offline map and no reception so I chickened out. Please prepare accordingly and mind the public transport is somewhat limited be sure to know the times."

Navigating Public Transport to Reigando Cave

Reaching Reigando Cave via public transport requires careful planning due to limited bus services. The primary route involves taking a bus from Kumamoto's Sakuramachi Bus Terminal to the Iwado Kannon Iriguchi stop. This bus journey typically takes around 30 minutes. TikTokReddit

Upon arrival at the bus stop, be prepared for a significant uphill walk of about 20-30 minutes to reach the Unganzenji Temple and then the cave itself. This walk can feel like a hike, especially if you are not accustomed to inclines. It's highly recommended to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes with good grip, as the terrain can be uneven. Reddit

Crucially, bus schedules are infrequent, with only a few services running per day in each direction. Missing a bus can mean a long wait. Therefore, it is essential to check the latest bus timings beforehand, perhaps by asking at the bus terminal information counter or consulting local transport guides. Having a backup plan, such as a taxi or ride-sharing app (like GO), is advisable in case of missed connections or if you prefer a more direct route. TikTokReddit

The Cave's Physical Characteristics and Safety

Reigando Cave, while historically significant, presents some physical challenges for visitors. The path leading to the cave involves navigating several flights of steep and uneven steps. These steps are not uniformly paved and can be quite slippery, especially after rain. Reddit

One reviewer noted that a particular step was almost like a slippery slope, leading to a fall. Therefore, it is strongly advised to hold onto the railings provided for support and to wear footwear with excellent grip. Be mindful of your surroundings, as there might be spiderwebs or other natural elements present. Reddit

Beyond the steps, the surrounding area is beautiful but can be remote. Cell reception can be unreliable, making it difficult to use navigation apps or call for assistance. Downloading an offline map of the area before you go is a practical step to ensure you can find your way, especially if you plan to explore beyond the immediate vicinity of the cave. Reddit
