What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the excellent onsen facilities, the quality of the hot spring water, and the beautiful natural surroundings. The authentic Japanese experience, including traditional rooms and accommodating staff, is also a major draw. However, some guests find the hotel's meal ticket system restrictive and expensive, leading them to seek dining options elsewhere.
"The staff, room, and onsen were excellent, very accommodating to foreigners. The surroundings are beautiful.
We were unpleasantly surprised by the food arrangements. There are multiple 'restaurants' in the hotel. However you cannot simply order food and pay for it, instead there is a 'meal ticket' system. You must pay 7000 yen per person for a 'meal ticket' that entitles you to a prearranged meal. We arrived by taxi, and had not eaten much earlier in the day. Upon discovering the highly expensive and limiting food arrangements, we were forced to walk a mile down the road at night to have a proper meal. The most confusing part is there were food items advertised with itemized prices, yet we were told no meal ticket = no food available in the hotel. Otherwise, a wonderful hotel, we thank them for their hospitality."

"This hotel was absolutely beautiful. It was an authentic Japanese experience from the minute you walk through the front door. You see guests in Japanese robes wandering comfortably. When we checked in the host was able to communicate in enough English that we understood the workings of the hotel. When we needed it we used Google translate. They could not have been more kind. I needed GF meals Since the hotel serves breakfast and dinner included- it was tricky for me to eat. Upon finding out my limitations the chef met with me personally with a translator. He created a separate GF meal for me while we were there. It was above and beyond. The food was incredible ! It was the best I ate the whole 3 weeks we traveled through Japan. The onsens were beautiful as was the city. This is a beautiful location and a most wonderful experience!"

"The bath here is truly an experience. It is huge, and the quality of the water is also fantastic. Dinner was also very interesting and delicious. I'm a 22 year resident of Kyushu, and I can say this hotel is high up on my list of the best stays to date. If you have time to visit the nearby national park, that won't disappoint either. A unique experience you'll not soon forget."

The Kirishima Onsen Experience
Beyond the therapeutic waters, the experience is deeply rooted in traditional Japanese hospitality. Many accommodations offer spacious, tatami-mat rooms that provide a sense of calm and authenticity. Guests often find themselves embracing the culture by wearing yukata (Japanese robes) around the hotel premises. While the primary draw is the onsen, the natural surroundings also invite exploration. Nearby hiking trails and national parks offer opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to connect with the picturesque Kyushu landscape.
It's important for visitors to be aware of the unique operational aspects of some establishments. The meal ticket system, while offering prearranged dining, can be a significant expense and may not suit everyone's preferences or dietary needs. Communication is key, especially for those with specific requirements. Many hotels are willing to work with guests, and utilizing translation tools can bridge any language gaps, ensuring a more comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Dining and Culinary Considerations
For those who find the meal ticket system restrictive or unsuitable, alternative dining options are available, though they may require some effort. Visitors have noted that it's possible to walk about a mile to find other restaurants. This means planning ahead, especially if arriving by taxi without having eaten, and being prepared for a nighttime stroll to secure a meal. However, the breakfast buffets are often a highlight, offering a wide array of delicious food and drinks, with the homemade yogurt drink frequently mentioned as a must-try.
Crucially, dietary restrictions are often accommodated with exceptional care. One review detailed a chef personally meeting with a guest to create a custom gluten-free meal, demonstrating a high level of service and dedication to guest satisfaction. This suggests that open communication with the hotel staff about any specific dietary needs is highly recommended and can lead to a very positive culinary experience.
