Reviews Summary

Eikokuji Temple is a unique destination blending eerie ghost legends with significant historical events, particularly its role in the Seinan War. Visitors are captivated by the ghost scroll and haunted pond, though some note that the 'real' scrolls are only displayed during a specific festival. The temple's historical connection to Saigo Takamori is a major draw for history buffs.

"I stopped by when I was in Hitoyoshi City. It's famous for being a ghost temple. The usual ghost scrolls are replicas. During the Eikokuji Ghost Festival in August, the real thing is displayed. If you're wondering if you want to see the real thing, the honest answer is no.
During the Seinan War, Eikokuji became the headquarters of Saigo Takamori. Both Hitoyoshi City and Eikokuji Temple were burned down in the war, and the temple's treasures were lost. However, the ghost scroll apparently survived. Perhaps it's the grudge of a concubine who committed suicide? The temple was rebuilt in 1891. It was lunchtime and there was no one inside, so I didn't go in."

"Weekday visit in August 2025

This temple served as the headquarters of the Satsuma army during the Seinan War.

A stone monument commemorating Saigo has also been erected here.

It is also known as the Ghost Temple.

The following is an excerpt from the temple's pamphlet.

In 1877 (Meiji 10), during the Seinan War, Saigo Takamori was defeated at Tabaruzaka and retreated. He set up his headquarters at this temple and remained there for 33 days.
However, due to the advancing Imperial Army, he retreated across Kakuto Pass on May 29th, protected by the troops of sniper commander Ikegami Shiro.

The temple was completely burned down during the Hitoyoshi Street Battle on June 1st. The main hall was rebuilt in 1891. Due to its aging, the main hall was rebuilt as it is today in 2017."

"The number of buses varies greatly depending on whether you take the express bus or train.

It's only a 40-minute walk from the express bus stop.

There are also city buses, so I recommend taking advantage of them.

However, there aren't many buses to Kagoshima.

Rather than returning to Kagoshima by express bus from Kagoshima, it might be better to go up to Shin-Yatsushiro or somewhere similar.

According to the guidebook, you won't be able to catch the Hibiscus bus departing at night.

You won't make the 12:00 PM bus.

If you've read the "Dan Doon" chapter, I recommend going there.

The ghost paintings and the haunted pond are a must-see.

The priest's explanation is about 10 minutes long, so I recommend watching it.

Rather than rushing around, I recommend sitting in front of the pond or on a tatami mat for even a minute or two in meditation.

They also have prayer beads and temple seals."

Historical Significance: The Seinan War Connection
