Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Himeji Castle for its breathtaking beauty and well-preserved architecture, often calling it the most beautiful castle in Japan. The historical significance and the adjacent Kokoen Garden are also major highlights. Some find the interior climb challenging and note that it can get very crowded, especially during peak seasons.

"One if the biggest castles in Japan located in Hyogo prefecture. You'll see the famous parts of it such as Hishi Gate, Sangoku Moat, Stone Wall East, Tile marked with a cross, Abura wall, Bizen Gate, Taiko (drum) tower, Folding Fan wall and ofcourse the Main Keep castle. This castle is also well known as "White Heron Castle" for its roaring keep and brilliant white plaster walls. This is one of the oldest surviving castle keeps in Japan. The admission fee is ¥1000/ adult. It is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site"

"We took the Shinkansen from Kyoto and it was super easy, just about an hour and then a walk from the station to the castle. The walk is a bit long and once you get inside there are lots of stairs going up, so be prepared for a bit of a climb. If you go in summer definitely bring water, it gets hot quickly.

That said, it’s absolutely worth it. The castle is just incredible, probably the most beautiful in Japan. The scale, the details, and the views from the top are unforgettable. A must-see if you’re visiting the Kansai area."

Rodrigo Branchini

"The area of this castle is really huge, with the condition is well preserve. The interior still fully intact, with wooden stairs and some old relics. The view from the top is amazing, you can see the city and the main road. There is an extensive garden too, with separate ticket. It's beautiful too, with the main building and koi pond.
It's really worth of visit. You need approx 3-4 hours to enjoy this castle."

The Legend of Okiku's Well

Himeji Castle is not only a marvel of architecture but also a site of intriguing folklore. The most famous legend is that of Okiku's Well, located within the castle grounds. The story tells of Okiku, a servant girl who was unjustly accused of stealing valuable plates. Fearing punishment, she drowned herself in the well. It is said that her spirit still counts the plates each night, her mournful cries echoing from the depths. TikTok+2

This chilling tale has captured the imagination and is believed to be the inspiration for the popular Japanese horror film 'The Ring.' Visitors often seek out the well, adding a layer of spooky fascination to their exploration of the castle. While the historical accuracy of the legend is debated, it undeniably adds a unique and memorable dimension to the Himeji Castle experience. TikTok

Architectural Marvel and Defensive Prowess

Himeji Castle, also known as Himeji Jo, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and considered one of Japan's finest surviving examples of 17th-century castle architecture. Its distinctive white exterior, resembling a heron in flight, has earned it the nickname 'White Heron Castle.' The castle's design is a testament to its defensive capabilities, featuring a complex maze of moats, walls, and narrow passageways designed to confuse and deter attackers. TikTokInstagram

The main keep, or 'tenshu,' stands six stories tall, but appears to be five stories from the outside. Inside, visitors will find steep, narrow wooden staircases and numerous small windows that served as firing ports for archers and arquebusiers. The castle's strategic layout and robust construction have ensured its survival through centuries of conflict and natural disasters, making it a symbol of Japanese resilience and engineering ingenuity. Exploring the Castle Grounds and Beyond

Beyond the imposing main keep, the Himeji Castle grounds offer a wealth of exploration. Wander through the various baileys and courtyards, imagining life within these ancient walls. The intricate network of paths and defensive structures provides a fascinating insight into feudal Japan's military strategies. TikTok

Adjacent to the castle is the Kokoen Garden, a collection of nine beautifully landscaped Edo-period style gardens.
