What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely breathtaking panoramic views from Castello di Gioiosa Guardia, calling them spectacular and worth the challenging hike. While the castle itself is in ruins with minimal signage, the journey through the Mediterranean scrub and the rewarding vistas make it a memorable experience for those seeking adventure and natural beauty. Some note the trail's steepness and lack of amenities.
"The picture below shows the begging of the path from the small lay-by on the provincial road to the castle.
There are several signs along the way that will guide you. Sometimes the path is not always clear, and it seems disrupted, but it's easy to get it right with a little bit of sense of direction. Basically, you have to always head for the top.
Bear in mind that the last part of the hike is incredibly steep. So just take it slowly both on the way up and down, and make sure to use the trees' branches on the side of the trail for leverage and support."

"The castle is just four walls high, with no indication of what they once were, an area with a cistern, and no signage. To get there, you have to park your car near a half-destroyed sign, then you have to guess a bit until you find some posts with a piece of wood shaped like an arrow, and signs with no indication whatsoever. A shame, another place left to neglect and the inexorable ravages of time."

"A small castle, a watchtower, certainly militarily useful in its time...
Easy to reach from the parking lot below the roadside, and it's easy to follow the signs to the top.
The ruins of the surrounding wall, the cistern, and the tower with its two floors plus the upper open space emerge.
The view is breathtaking."

The Hike to Gioiosa Guardia
The final ascent is particularly steep, and reviewers emphasize the importance of using tree branches for leverage and support. Proper footwear is crucial for navigating the uneven and often loose terrain, especially during the descent, which can be trickier than the climb.
