"Highly recommended! During our holiday in Tuscany, we visited the Punta Falcone Astronomical Observatory with our family on July 11th. We parked our car for free at the Parcheggio Marina di Salivoli and walked up a beautiful path, immersed in nature. At the top, you have a magnificent view of the bay, and after about a 10-minute walk, we arrived at the observatory. Because we were early, we continued down the path and visited the lower viewpoints and the World War II cannon with a magnificent view of the sea.
Around 9:00 PM, we walked back up the path and were warmly welcomed by Simone, who was very enthusiastic about the story, and the other astronomers. Thanks to these volunteers, we immediately felt at home. We gathered outside the observatory on the viewing platform and enjoyed a beautiful view of both Elba and Corsica as the sun slowly set. Then it was time to wait for the moonrise.
Because many people visited the observatory that evening, the astronomers installed extra telescopes on and around the viewing platform to give everyone the opportunity to observe the sky clearly. While we waited, the International Space Station flew overhead, and the volunteers enthusiastically told us all about the observatory. Even the non-English-speaking volunteers did their best to share their knowledge with us. Their enthusiasm was palpable. What a wonderful group of people to spend a wonderful evening with!
The time had come to climb into the dome and look through the large telescope at the moon and various objects in deep space. Thanks to the English-speaking astronomer Paolo, we were able to follow all the information clearly. After explaining everything to the Italian guests, he repeated everything in English especially for us. Very thoughtful. The part of the moon we were observing was remarkably detailed, and we were also able to observe the stars up close. To think that you're looking so far back in time during your observation is a truly special experience. After spending quite some time in the dome, we were greeted by Simone, who explained more about the observatory's operation. They also take beautiful photos of the sky and everything there is to see in this beautiful place. Both we and our 9- and 11-year-old boys loved it.
Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful evening!"
