The guided tours are highlighted as informative and engaging, bringing the ancient burial grounds to life. "This is a great site to visit while in Naples. You have to go with a tour but tickets are reasonable and with your ticket, you also get a free entry to another catacomb to use within the next year. I suggest buying ahead of time because slots are limited and you may end up having to come back later. They have tours in Italian and English. Our tour guide was amazing and answered any questions anyone had.
The catacombs were super interesting and full of history. Unfortunately there is no photography inside the catacombs (although clearly people don’t follow the rules as you can see in the other reviews) so I don’t have many pictures to share but it’s worth seeing in person!"
Miranda Converse
"A must see if you are visiting Naples. Run by a cooperative who employ local young people as guides with profits going into community development activities. One ticket gets access to both catacombs - one of best value tickets in Italy. Don’t miss the second tour, just 15 minutes walk down the hill. Interesting contemporary art in the church qnd surrounding streets."

"I had a fantastic experience with a tour guide who provided interesting information throughout the journey."

Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples) provides a broader historical journey, exploring ancient Greek aqueducts, Roman theaters, and even World War II air-raid shelters. It offers a more varied experience across different eras. Another popular option is the Galleria Borbonica (Bourbon Tunnel), which served as an emergency escape route for the royal family and later as a makeshift hospital and storage area during the war. It's known for its larger passages, some accommodating horses, and its historical significance tied to the Bourbon monarchy.
When choosing between them, consider what aspect of Naples' underground you wish to explore. For a deep dive into early Christian history and art, San Gennaro is unparalleled. For a broader historical overview spanning ancient to modern times, Napoli Sotterranea is excellent. For a glimpse into royal history and wartime utility, the Galleria Borbonica is a compelling choice. Many travelers recommend doing one catacomb and one tunnel for variety.
