Our journey to Naples from Sorrento the the catacombs de San Gennaro and San Gaudioso. The catacombs were originally a pagan burial ground and your placement was determined by social class. It was later made Catholic by the Benedictine monks. San Gennaro is the saint of Naples and he used to be buried there. They had the tradition of draining liquids from bodies before burial and they still have t...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Catacombs of San Gennaro for their historical significance and unique atmosphere, offering a fascinating glimpse into early Christian Naples. The guided tours are highlighted as informative and engaging, bringing the ancient burial grounds to life. Some find the experience a bit somber, but most agree it's a must-see for understanding the city's deep historical roots.

"This is a great site to visit while in Naples. You have to go with a tour but tickets are reasonable and with your ticket, you also get a free entry to another catacomb to use within the next year. I suggest buying ahead of time because slots are limited and you may end up having to come back later. They have tours in Italian and English. Our tour guide was amazing and answered any questions anyone had.
The catacombs were super interesting and full of history. Unfortunately there is no photography inside the catacombs (although clearly people don’t follow the rules as you can see in the other reviews) so I don’t have many pictures to share but it’s worth seeing in person!"

Miranda Converse

"A must see if you are visiting Naples. Run by a cooperative who employ local young people as guides with profits going into community development activities. One ticket gets access to both catacombs - one of best value tickets in Italy. Don’t miss the second tour, just 15 minutes walk down the hill. Interesting contemporary art in the church qnd surrounding streets."

Mark Dieters

"I had a fantastic experience with a tour guide who provided interesting information throughout the journey."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of San Gennaro's Catacombs

The Catacombs of San Gennaro are a profound testament to Naples' ancient past, serving as a significant Christian burial ground from the 2nd century AD. Initially, these subterranean spaces were used for pagan burials, but they were later consecrated by Christian communities. The site is named after Saint Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, who was martyred in the early 4th century and is believed to have been initially buried here. The catacombs expanded over centuries, becoming a complex network of tunnels, chapels, and tombs carved directly into the volcanic tuff rock. Instagram+1

During the 17th century, the catacombs underwent a significant restoration and were reopened to the public, becoming a site of veneration and historical interest. The guided tours today offer a fascinating journey through these layers of history, revealing not only the burial practices of early Christians but also the artistic achievements of the time, such as the remarkably preserved 5th-century frescoes found within its chapels. The atmosphere is one of solemnity and historical weight, offering a unique perspective on the city's origins. Instagram

Comparing Naples' Underground Attractions

Naples is renowned for its extensive network of underground sites, and the Catacombs of San Gennaro are just one part of this fascinating subterranean world. Many visitors are drawn to explore multiple underground attractions to get a comprehensive understanding of the city's hidden history. While San Gennaro focuses on early Christian burial, other sites offer different historical narratives. Reddit

Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples) provides a broader historical journey, exploring ancient Greek aqueducts, Roman theaters, and even World War II air-raid shelters. It offers a more varied experience across different eras. Another popular option is the Galleria Borbonica (Bourbon Tunnel), which served as an emergency escape route for the royal family and later as a makeshift hospital and storage area during the war. It's known for its larger passages, some accommodating horses, and its historical significance tied to the Bourbon monarchy. Reddit

When choosing between them, consider what aspect of Naples' underground you wish to explore. For a deep dive into early Christian history and art, San Gennaro is unparalleled. For a broader historical overview spanning ancient to modern times, Napoli Sotterranea is excellent. For a glimpse into royal history and wartime utility, the Galleria Borbonica is a compelling choice. Many travelers recommend doing one catacomb and one tunnel for variety. Reddit
