What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità for its profound spiritual atmosphere and historical depth, particularly the ancient Madonna fresco and the intriguing Catacombs of San Gaudioso. The shrine of Santa Maria Francesca is a highlight for many seeking blessings. Some find the Rione Sanità neighborhood a bit chaotic but appreciate its authentic charm.
"Stunning Basilica and it has a real charm. The area is poorer than most of Naples and for some reason way nicer.
They have several fat cats who live inside and one I nick named, El Chunko.
The whole place is stunning."
Craig Whyte
"This is an amazingly ornate church. It's one of the few churches I have been in where there's a double staircase leading up to the altar. The decoration is simply wonderful and it's a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of this busy Neapolitan district. For those who like such things, there is also entrance to the Catacombs of San Gaudioso. The church itself is quite simple and plain in design until you approach the altar area where there is an explosion of marble and semi-precious stones. Beautifully chubby cherubs sit on the ends of the staircase and everywhere you look, your eye is taken by some small detail."

"Beautiful basilica with great history. It is also the entry place for the catacombs of San Gaudioso. We visited during service and we were not told to go away like it usually happens."
