The Church of St. Peter is located within the ancient city walls of Molfetta. It stands on the same site as the older church, whose origins date back to 1174, but of which no tangible trace remains today. It fell into disrepair in the second half of the 16th century, when it was rebuilt from the foundations and consecrated on April 24, 1667, by Bishop Francesco Marini, as recorded in the documents of Sarnelli's "Santa Visita." From 1750 to 1756, further restoration was necessary due to damage sustained in the 1731 earthquake.
The building is made of local stone, with regular square ashlars on the façade and square blocks on the side elevations, and rusticated ashlar work in the lower portion. The church is on two levels, with a ground floor at different heights. It is surmounted by a dome. Inside, it features a single nave with an ellipsoidal plan, a quadrangular side chapel, a choir above the entrance, and a bell tower to the right. The floor is marble with geometric patterns, and the walls are decorated with stucco and frescoes.
The Baroque-style façade is curvilinear, enlivened by pilasters with shafts, bases, and capitals, separated by shell-shaped decorations and small niches decorated with festoons and floral motifs. It is divided into three orders by richly ornamented string courses. The entrance portal, flanked by floral motifs, ends with an entablature and features a pierced gable with a Lecce-style archway.
