What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Castel del Monte for its unique octagonal architecture and stunning panoramic views. The castle's historical significance and mysterious aura are major draws. Some find the parking and shuttle bus fees a bit high, and a few mention that the interior is largely stripped of its original decorations.
"Amazing Swabian castle dating back to about 1290! It is surrounded by a forest and you only need a few hours to see everything. Bring some good hiking shoes, unless you are able to pay for parking close to the castle. We went during the week and it was not very busy. There are a few great videos inside the castle, which stays amazingly cool in the summer heat!!"

"A gorgeous castle! Castel del Monte is super unique and just stunning to see and visit! The castle has been built with various materials, of which sadly enough only few can be seen.
The views that you can experience are amazing.
Sadly you now have to pay for parking 5€ for a car and if you want to take the bus up to the castle this is another 2€ per person…"

The Enigmatic Architecture of Castel del Monte
The castle's construction materials, primarily local limestone and white marble, give it a distinctive light color. The interior, though stripped of its original decorations, still showcases the remarkable geometric planning. The windows also follow this pattern, with single-arched windows on the ground floor and a mix of double and one triple-arched window on the upper floor, each strategically placed. This meticulous attention to detail underscores the castle's purpose as a place of intellect and symbolism rather than purely military defense.
Unlike typical medieval fortresses, Castel del Monte lacks a moat or drawbridge, further suggesting its non-military function. Its isolated location on a hilltop overlooking the Murge plateau adds to its mystique and grandeur. The castle's silhouette against the sky is an iconic image of Puglia, drawing visitors from around the world to unravel its secrets.
Frederick II and the Symbolism of Castel del Monte
The castle's design is thought to incorporate elements of astronomy and sacred geometry. The prevalence of the number eight is particularly significant, potentially representing the union of the circle (heaven) and the square (earth), or the eight winds. Some scholars suggest the castle's orientation aligns with solstices and equinoxes, further enhancing its mystical aura.
Castel del Monte embodies Frederick II's vision of a unified empire and his appreciation for diverse cultural influences. The architectural styles blend Romanesque, Gothic, and Islamic elements, mirroring the emperor's own cosmopolitan background and his role as a bridge between different cultures. Visiting Castel del Monte offers a unique opportunity to step into the world of this fascinating medieval ruler and ponder the enduring mysteries he left behind.
