"The cult of Saint John the Baptist was brought to Maruggio by the Knights of Malta around 1300. Devotion to this saint was widespread and among the most important among the religious order of chivalry. Maruggio, founded by the Knights, displays signs of their presence in many buildings and traditions. A chapel, appropriately called "Saint John Outside the Walls," was also built in San Giovanni, and the Mother Church itself, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, is a legacy of the Order of Malta, which honored Mary especially in her depiction as a child.
When Maruggio was founded, Saint John somehow automatically became its protector, and from then on the people of Maruggio invoked him, long celebrating his feast on June 24th. The change in the feast date is documented in the episcopal decree of June 30, 1928. This episcopal document accepted the request of the people of Maruggia to celebrate the feast on July 13th and 14th, especially in commemoration of the "miracle" of Saint John, who is said to have saved the town from a strong and violent storm years earlier. There is no exhaustive information on this matter, but it seems that on that event, the people of Maruggia took refuge in the church and prayed to the Saint for protection from the violent storm that was underway, which soon subsided.
