What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Marostica is widely praised for its beautiful, well-preserved medieval charm, highlighted by the unique Piazza degli Scacchi and its legendary Human Chess Game. Visitors appreciate the authentic atmosphere, the stunning views from the castles, and the overall pleasant experience without feeling overly touristy. Some minor drawbacks include the limited availability of chess pieces for casual play and the need to check schedules for specific events.
"The story has it that two princes wanted the hand if the princess and were to fight a dual. The father instead suggested a chess match in the square. The winner weds the princess and the loser marries her younger sister. 100 years ago, after WW1, a local historian uncovered this story, and a local chess player then had it made into a local festival. Every 2 years the festival is re-enacted in the square, using real people and horses to play a game if chess. The square is one, huge chess board.
The town square is very attractive with lovely bars and restaurants dotted around it. The entrance has an impressive barbican which can be visited at from the too of the tower there are superb views if the region. The square and town are embraced by the town Waller and battlements that go up a steep hill with the old palace at the top. A very classic fairy tale medieval city and castle."

"Beautiful square in this small town just west of Bassano and north of Vicenza. The square has cafes surrounding it and nice views of the castle on the hills. Definitely worth a stop. Parking nearby."
Paul Heller
"Such a beautiful piazza surrounded by an old castle and lots of restaurants. There's a castle tour and souvenir shop. Most important they maintain Human Chess Game on the plaza grounds, and September of 2024 there'll be a competition."
