What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the spectacular panoramic views from Castello San Giorgio, calling them a must-see and worth the climb. The castle offers a peaceful escape from the crowded Cinque Terre villages, with friendly staff adding to the positive experience. While the museum is considered secondary to the views, the combined ticket is recommended to support the site.
"For some fabulous views over La Spazia, the Castello San Giorgio is definitely worth a visit.
We paid for both the Castello and the museum within ( which was only a small amount more) just to support the venue. The museum is not a major element of the visit.
To our surprise, as we were there for an hour, there wasn't another single visitor to be seen. I suspect most had crowded into boats and trains to visit the hellishly packed villages of Cinque Terra.
The views alone are worth the visit. If you are put off by a potential long climb, just follow the main sign through the town. These will lead you first to an elevator, and then to a small funicular. Leaving your energy to climb within the castle itself.
If its is always quiet this is a good place to shake off the mass of day tourists!
We enjoyed it and recommend it."

"It has a 5-star view from the roof-top terrace. The museum is not worth the visit on its own, but I would buy the full-price ticket that includes the museum just to support the castle and the staff who provide a wonderful experience to the visitors."

"The museum host several ancient artefacts from the surrounding area. The information about the artefacts can be seen in the leaflet that they will give you at the entrace. It also has a very nice view in the upper terrace! If youre a student, the reduced ticket cost €4. Id say its worth the climb from la sepzia centrale haha"

Navigating La Spezia and Cinque Terre
When exploring Cinque Terre, the train is the most efficient mode of transport between villages. While hiking trails connect the villages, some may be closed due to weather or maintenance, so checking trail status is advisable. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, utilizing the train allows you to easily hop between the five picturesque towns, enjoying their unique charm without the stress of constant uphill climbs.
Pro-tip: To truly experience the Cinque Terre without overwhelming crowds, consider an early morning train, as highlighted by travelers who found the villages quiet and serene before 10 AM. This strategy allows for a more intimate exploration of the colorful streets and stunning coastal scenery before the main influx of tourists arrives.
The Allure of Castello San Giorgio
Beyond the views, the castle houses a museum that showcases ancient artifacts unearthed from the surrounding region. While some reviewers note that the museum might not be the primary reason for a visit, they emphasize that purchasing a combined ticket is a worthwhile way to support the preservation of this historic site and its dedicated staff. The staff themselves are frequently commended for their hospitality and helpfulness, with one reviewer mentioning they even guarded shopping bags.
One of the most appealing aspects of Castello San Giorgio is its relative quietude compared to the bustling Cinque Terre villages. This makes it an ideal spot to escape the crowds, enjoy a moment of peace, and appreciate the historical significance of the fortress. The accessibility is also a plus, with an elevator and funicular available to ease the ascent, ensuring that more visitors can enjoy the experience without a strenuous climb.
Culinary Delights of La Spezia
Given its prime coastal location, seafood is another significant culinary attraction. Restaurants in La Spezia offer fresh catches of the day, prepared in traditional Ligurian styles. Beyond focaccia and seafood, the region boasts a rich culinary heritage with pasta dishes, pesto (though more famously from Genoa), and a variety of antipasti that showcase fresh, local ingredients.
For travelers looking for authentic dining experiences, exploring the smaller streets of La Spezia away from the main tourist thoroughfares can lead to hidden gems. Trying local specialties like focaccia from a neighborhood bakery or enjoying a meal at a family-run trattoria offers a true taste of the region's gastronomic culture.
