What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Oasi di Porto Trajan's Basin is a site of immense historical importance, showcasing the impressive Roman port infrastructure. However, visitors frequently cite difficulties with access, unreliable opening hours, and a restrictive guided tour-only policy, leading to frustration and a perception of high cost for limited exploration time.
"You can’t visit without a guide which is a shame. I’d prefer to pay the €12 entrance fee (which is an absolute insane amount to pay) and enjoy the walk in solitude rather than being escorted everywhere and shown the exit after an hour.
I can’t believe a place like this has been privatised."
Kelly Hegarty
"I really wanted to see this park, but it is one of the worst configured sites in Italy.
1. The park hours are not correct on Google or their website, I made 3 attempts to get in and the gates were locked every time.
2. You cannot get here on bike or foot. If you don't have a car, expect a 20 euro cab ride. (For me, this totaled 60 euros and 3 hours trying to get in)
As this place has enormous historical significance, it's sad to see that it's so inaccessible. You can't see anything from outside the park, so if you want to get here I guess you just have to be lucky enough for them to be open."
Michael Pfaff
"Considering this is such an important historical site I was very disappointed it seemed so difficult to visit.
Where can you park? How do you get in? We drove around for 30mins but couldn’t find a way in."

Navigating Access and Hours
Furthermore, the site's inaccessibility by public transport or on foot is a significant barrier. Travelers without a car often face substantial taxi costs, turning a simple visit into an expensive endeavor. This privatization of a historically significant site has drawn criticism, with visitors wishing for more straightforward access and less restrictive entry policies.
Recommendation: Always call the Oasi directly to confirm their opening hours on the day of your visit. If possible, travel by car, and be prepared for potential difficulties in locating parking and the entrance. Patience and flexibility are key when planning a trip here.
The Guided Tour Experience
One common sentiment is that the tours are relatively short, with some visitors feeling they are rushed through the site and shown the exit after only an hour. This limited duration, combined with the entrance fee, has led some to feel that the experience doesn't offer sufficient value for money. The inability to explore freely or revisit areas can be a drawback for photographers or history enthusiasts seeking a more in-depth experience.
Key Takeaway: Be prepared for a structured visit. If you value extensive independent exploration, this might not be the ideal site. However, if you appreciate guided insights and a focused historical overview, the tours can still be informative.
Historical Significance of Trajan's Port
The basin itself was an engineering marvel, featuring a hexagonal shape designed for maximum efficiency and protection from the sea. Surrounding it were numerous warehouses (horrea), administrative buildings, and docks, all indicative of the scale and complexity of Roman logistics. The preservation of these structures, even in ruins, offers invaluable insights into Roman urban planning, trade networks, and architectural capabilities.
Exploring the Oasi allows visitors to walk through the remnants of this vital infrastructure, imagining the bustling activity that once took place here. It's a tangible connection to the economic and logistical backbone that supported the vast Roman Empire, making it a site of immense historical and archaeological value.
