Reviews Summary

Visitors find Castello di Carlo V to be an affordable historical site with impressive exterior architecture and great views. However, many are disappointed by limited interior access due to ongoing renovations or closures, and accessibility can be a challenge for those with strollers or mobility issues.

"We don't recommend the visit. Even though the entrance price is 2€ it's not worth it because most of the places inside of the castle and indicated in the leaflet, pannel and signs are not open for visit (none of the bastions, no toilet and the museum isbclosed and needs an extra ticket) and the rest is in a bad condition. Also not recommended to visit with a wheelchair or stroller. The evelator for disabled is closed."

Gonzalo Osés

"Just the top of the castle, no interior. Steep, uneven, and few hand rails. Views are nice, but they are everywhere."

Brittany Flokstra

"Beautiful building, but so sad to see it in such a bad state. The place, like so much of Crotone, needs love and civic pride. The place could be so beautiful, and such a great visitor attraction. It could be home to artists and other creative, and a real draw to the town. Some nice views, but needs love."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into History

The Castello di Carlo V in Crotone is a significant historical fortification with roots stretching back to the 9th century. Originally constructed around 840 AD, its primary purpose was to protect the city from frequent Saracen incursions. This strategic defensive role shaped its early architecture.

Over the centuries, the castle underwent substantial modifications. The most notable expansion occurred in 1541 under the reign of Emperor Charles V, after whom it is now named. These later additions transformed the fortress, giving it the imposing polygonal plan and prominent towers that are visible today. The castle stands as a tangible link to Crotone's past, reflecting periods of conflict, defense, and imperial influence. Instagram+1

Despite its historical importance, many visitors note that parts of the castle are often closed for renovations or are in a state of disrepair. However, the accessible sections, particularly the towers and ramparts, still offer a compelling insight into its past and provide excellent viewpoints. The ongoing efforts, such as the 'Antica Kroton Futura' project, aim to valorize this heritage, with improvements planned for access and surrounding areas. Instagram+1

Visitor Experience and Accessibility

Visiting the Castello di Carlo V offers a mixed experience for travelers. While the low entrance fee (around 2 euros) makes it an attractive option, many reviews highlight limitations in what can be accessed. Visitors often report that most interior spaces, including bastions and museums, are closed, leaving only the towers and ramparts accessible. Reddit+1

Accessibility is a significant concern. Although there are plans and some implemented measures like elevators to improve access for those with disabilities or families with strollers, these are not always operational or sufficient. The terrain within the castle can be steep and uneven, making navigation challenging. InstagramReddit

Despite these drawbacks, the views from the top are consistently praised, offering panoramic vistas of Crotone and the surrounding coastline. The castle's imposing exterior and historical significance are also appreciated, even when interior access is limited. Some visitors have had positive experiences thanks to helpful staff or insightful local guides who provide historical context. InstagramReddit
