Have you ever heard of a death mask? In the Church of San Domenico and the Church of San Sigismondo, I found two people donning such masks. The first individual, in the Church of San Domenico, is Saint Dominic (1179-1221). As you watch, you will see that his hands and face wear porcelain masks. Similarly, in the Church of San Sigismondo, Imelda Lambertini (1322-1333), is also wearing a death mask...

Reviews Summary

Visitors frequently praise the architectural beauty and historical significance of the Church of San Domenico complexes, particularly their cloisters and unique artistic installations. Some reviewers note that information systems can be lacking, and the upkeep of certain areas, like plants in the cloister, could be improved. Overall, it's considered an extraordinary and worthwhile visit.

"The monastic complex of San Domenico, including the cloister and the church, is an important landmark in the city. It has been renovated over the years and is an architectural work well worth visiting. It hosted the philosopher Tommaso Campanella, and the recently renovated square in front of it is dedicated to him."

mariantonia longo

"The monastic complex of San Domenico, consisting of the church and the former convent of the Dominican Fathers, is located on the left bank of the Busento river, in Piazza Tommaso Campanella, before the Mario Martire bridge and close to the confluence of the rivers. The layout of the ancient convent develops around its square-plan cloister, set on six octagonal pillars on each side, which support the round arches. At the center of the courtyard is the well with the coat of arms of the Ruffo di Calabria family; on one side of the cloister are the portals giving access to the building, characterized by classical elements and tuff moldings, in the Durazzesco-Catalan style, at the keystone of the central one is the coat of arms of the Sanseverino family. A restored area of the monumental complex houses the BoCS Art Museum, which houses a rich exhibition of contemporary works of art, created by artists from all over the world in the Artist Residences located on the riverside. Currently on the first floor there is the hall for civil unions of the Municipality of Cosenza, while on the upper floor there are municipal offices such as the one for weddings. Open every day from Monday to Saturday (morning) I recommend visiting it because it is truly extraordinary."

Semper Fidelis

"The cloister, part of the monastic complex of San Domenico adjacent to the church, represents an extremely refined architectural example, which hosted the philosopher Tommaso Campanella to whom the finely restored square in front was dedicated.
The monastic complex, in the past, was also used as a military headquarters. Recently restored, purchased by the Municipality of Cosenza it currently houses the offices of the culture and tourism sectors and the BoCs Art Museum
Furthermore, the municipality now allows the possibility of celebrating civil weddings upon reservation. It also hosts concerts and craft exhibitions."
