"Currently, to reach this open and free archaeological site, park at the second barrier along the access road. Park in a space in front of it and walk uphill for about 20 minutes to a serviced area. Behind the area (facing the road if you're coming up) is the site sign and the open gate. A 10-15 minute downhill path leads to the archaeological area. From the reconstruction and the explanations on the signs, it must have been an important site. A mosaic with remains of walls are housed in a structure visible from the outside through glass. It's a shame that the site isn't in perfect condition. The glass is very dirty, and the mosaic is covered in a carpet of earthworms, a sign that it hasn't been cleaned in a long time. The view is beautiful, and you can still appreciate the magnificence of the place."

"You park on the road, a short and easy dirt path in the woods downhill (bring suitable shoes) to get to the archaeological area with free entry. It extends over three levels. Overall quite well kept. Nice view."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Sanctuary of Ercole Curino: A Sacred History

The Corfinium Archaeological Area is primarily the site of the Sanctuary of Ercole Curino, located on the slopes of Mount Morrone. Established in the 1970s, this sanctuary is recognized as one of the most significant sacred areas in the Abruzzo region. Its construction spans multiple phases, beginning with a temple on a high podium at the uppermost level. Subsequent expansions led to the creation of a 'sacellum' with monumental steps and a paved square, opening onto porticoes that overlooked the Peligna Valley. Reddit

The complex underwent a major renovation around the 1st century BC. This phase involved a lower terrace supported by a robust wall, with vaulted rooms situated beneath a large square. The sanctuary's prominence waned after a landslide buried its structures, but its sacredness persisted through the spread of Christianity, evidenced by a small church built on its edge, later expanded by Pope Celestine V. Excavations, which began in 1957, initially suggested the presence of Ovid's villa but ultimately revealed the site of an Italic sanctuary dedicated to Hercules, confirmed by votive materials and inscriptions. Reddit

Despite the ancient landslide around the 2nd century AD that buried the upper sanctuary, the site remained partially occupied. The addition of a Christian church near the southern staircase highlights the site's enduring spiritual significance. Today, visitors can explore these layered remnants, appreciating the architectural evolution and historical depth of this ancient sacred space. Reddit

Navigating Your Visit: Practicalities and Perspectives

Visiting Corfinium requires a bit of planning, particularly regarding access. Travelers consistently mention parking at the second barrier and undertaking an uphill walk of approximately 20 minutes to reach a serviced area. From there, a 10-15 minute downhill path leads to the archaeological site itself. This means comfortable, sturdy footwear is a must, as the paths are described as dirt tracks. Reddit+1

While the site is free to enter and offers beautiful views, some reviews indicate that the preservation could be improved. Visitors have noted dirty glass on protective structures and natural debris on mosaics, suggesting a need for more frequent maintenance. However, the inherent historical value and the scenic surroundings are still highly appreciated. It's a place where you can appreciate the remnants of its past magnificence and imagine its former glory. Reddit

For those planning a visit, it's wise to bring your own water, as there are no facilities on-site. Reading the informative signs is also recommended to gain a better understanding of the site's history and the reconstructions. Despite any minor drawbacks, the unique experience of exploring this ancient sanctuary makes it a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts. Reddit+1
