What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Abbey of Santo Spirito al Morrone impressive for its historical significance as a former Celestinian convent and its surviving 12th-century art. However, many note the frustratingly strange and limited opening hours, which can hinder visits. The abbey's past as a prison and the loss of treasures also add a layer of melancholy to its otherwise striking architecture.
"This former abbacy was once the main convent of Celestinians - followers of st Pope Celestin V. Now we can see the result of reconstructions of XVIII century so it's not as old as I want))) Moreover after secularization the convent "works" as a prison and most part of its treasuries were taken to museums or thieved. So it's more like nut-shell than real nut but it's still impressive. You can visit three cloisters of five, the former church, refectorium and library
Be careful: the convent is open for visitors with very strange timetable (see one of the photos)"

A Glimpse into Celestinian History
However, the abbey's story is also marked by secularization, which led to its use as a prison and the dispersal of many of its original treasures. This means that while the structure is impressive, it's more of a 'nut-shell' of its former glory, with much of its wealth now housed in museums or lost. The reconstructions from the 18th century add another layer to its complex past, blending original elements with later modifications.
Exploring the Abbey's Architecture and Art
The interior boasts remarkably beautiful paintings and ceilings that date back to the 12th century, a testament to the artistic heritage preserved within its walls. While the abbey may not be as ancient as some might hope, the surviving art and the results of the 18th-century reconstructions create a visually compelling experience.
Combining Your Visit with Nature
A particularly recommended activity is the hike to Eremo Sant'Onofrio, a nearby trail that offers a chance to connect with the landscape and discover more historical sites. This combination of historical exploration and outdoor activity provides a well-rounded visit for many travelers.
