What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unique natural beauty of Balena Bianca, describing it as a stunning, otherworldly landscape. The warm thermal waters and the striking limestone formations are major highlights. However, the lack of facilities, slippery paths, and potential for crowds are frequently mentioned drawbacks.
"Amazing experience, plenty of parking (pay at the machine for ticket). Short 5 minutes walk to the hot water. The upper levels are a lot hotter than the lower part so I recommend trying both. There are no showers outside , sometimes the mud on the way gets wet and slippery.
We came at 8 am and were alone. Outside was freezing cold 3 degrees , very quite, very pastoral.
All over all amazing experience, we drove 2 hours and we were happy."

"Beautiful place with basically no place to change m, to shower or so. It’s completely wild and public, so no wonder tons of people are gathering, and people always took the good spot and not leaving at all. As you can see, the hot spring is provided by the water tube so the good position with hot water are limited, so when there are too many people, experience ain’t gonna be as good as it should be. But overall a very beautiful place. Remember to bring the slider as the surface has lots of rocks/stones that hurst your feet."

"Very cool place to visit. Of course you have the smell of sulfer and you get a caulky film on your skin after sitting in the water. But a cool experience for sure."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Geology of Balena Bianca
Over centuries, this continuous deposition has built up the massive, porous limestone structures that give the area its unique appearance. The 'White Whale' is the most prominent example, shaped by the flow of water and mineral buildup. The varying temperatures of the springs, with upper pools being hotter, also influence the rate and type of mineral deposition, creating a diverse landscape of white, chalky formations amidst the lush Tuscan forest.
Experiencing the Thermal Waters
It's important to note that the experience is entirely natural and wild. The 'mud' that can accumulate on the paths and rocks is a result of the mineral deposits. While some find this adds to the rustic charm, others may find it a bit messy. The upper pools are generally hotter, so it's advisable to test the water temperature before fully immersing yourself. Remember to bring at least two towels: one for drying off and another to place on your car seat for the journey home, as the mineral content can leave a residue.
Navigating the Terrain and Facilities
Visitors should be aware that Balena Bianca is a completely natural and public site, meaning there are no man-made facilities. This includes a lack of changing rooms, restrooms, or showers. It's essential to come prepared with everything you need, including swimwear, towels, and any personal items. The experience is about embracing the wild, natural beauty of the Tuscan landscape and its thermal wonders.
