Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Eremo di Vivo for its picturesque Romanesque church nestled in beautiful woodlands, and the intriguing historical elements like pagan altars and ancient monk cells. The surrounding park, with its springs and waterfall, offers a lovely hiking experience. However, the main drawback is that the church interior is closed to visitors, serving only as a tomb.

"A charming Romanesque church nestled in the woods. The interior cannot be visited because it is now the tomb of the Cervini family. Behind the church is a pagan altar used for sacrificial rites. Nearby are also two drying sheds, one of which was most likely one of the cells of the monks who lived in the area in ancient times."

"The Ermicciolo is easily reached on foot from the "Capovetra Spring." Continuing along the marked trails (following the signs that say "Sentiero dell'Acqua"), you'll reach a very beautiful waterfall.
I don't recommend following the "Sentiero delle fonti" (Water Trail), as it doesn't lead to very interesting places in my opinion.
The walk through the woods is very beautiful, beneath beech and chestnut trees. There are fountains along the way. Despite it being August, it wasn't very crowded."

Michela Boldorini

"A beautiful church within the Vivo d'Orcia park. There are marked trails and a picnic area. The hermitage is easily reached from the parking lot via a short, slightly steep trail. However, the church is closed and not open to visitors."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Significance of Eremo di Vivo

The Eremo di Vivo, a small Romanesque church, holds a unique place in the Vivo d'Orcia landscape. While its interior is now a private tomb for the Cervini family and thus inaccessible, its exterior and the surrounding area whisper tales of its past. Originally, it was likely part of a monastic settlement, evidenced by the nearby ancient monk cells and drying sheds. These structures offer a tangible connection to the lives of those who sought solitude and spiritual practice in this secluded woodland setting.

Adding to its mystique, a pagan altar is situated behind the church. This suggests that the site may have held spiritual significance long before the arrival of Christianity, possibly used for ancient rites. The juxtaposition of pagan and Christian elements on the same site speaks to the layered history of the region, where older traditions often blended with or were reinterpreted by new faiths. Exploring these remnants provides a fascinating glimpse into the evolving spiritual landscape of Tuscany.

Beyond its historical structures, the Eremo di Vivo is celebrated for its natural surroundings. The area is part of the Vivo d'Orcia park, known for its clear springs and beautiful woodlands. The hike to the Eremo often includes paths that lead to picturesque waterfalls, making the journey as rewarding as the destination itself. This blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty makes Eremo di Vivo a compelling destination for those seeking a deeper connection with the Tuscan countryside.

Exploring the Vivo d'Orcia Park Trails

The Vivo d'Orcia park offers a network of marked trails that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region. The most recommended route is the 'Sentiero dell'Acqua' (Water Trail), which guides hikers from the Capovetra Spring towards a stunning waterfall. This trail winds through enchanting beech and chestnut forests, providing a refreshing and scenic walking experience. Travelers often praise the tranquility and the picturesque views encountered along this path. Reddit

While the 'Sentiero dell'Acqua' is a highlight, another trail, the 'Sentiero delle fonti' (Spring Trail), is generally considered less interesting by visitors and may not lead to particularly noteworthy sights. It's advisable to prioritize the 'Sentiero dell'Acqua' for a more rewarding exploration. The trails are generally well-maintained, but wearing appropriate hiking footwear is crucial due to some slightly steep or uneven sections. Reddit

Along the way, you might encounter fountains, and the presence of ancient structures like the monk cells and the pagan altar adds a layer of historical discovery to the natural hike. The park is also equipped with a picnic area, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely day trip, combining a moderate hike with a relaxing meal amidst nature. Despite being a popular area, even in August, it's noted that the trails don't tend to feel overly crowded, allowing for a peaceful experience. Reddit
