Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awestruck by the opulent Baroque interiors of Santa Maria della Carità, particularly in Ascoli Piceno, praising the intricate artwork and serene atmosphere. The church's historical significance and the spiritual experience of perpetual adoration are frequently highlighted as profound aspects of a visit. However, some may find photography restrictions due to religious practices to be a drawback.

"The church of Santa Maria della Carità is a baroque church.
It is also called the broom because there was a brotherhood called the disciplined who, by custom, during processions beat each other with broom-shaped whips.
Inside, currently, perpetual Eucharistic adoration can be found"

Paolo Ulpiani

"It is commonly called the Church of the Broom by the citizens of Ascoli, after the Confraternity of the Disciplined, whose members, during processions, inflicted corporal punishment on themselves with broom-shaped whips.[1]

History

The Confraternity's presence is documented as early as the 14th century, and it was during that period that the original place of worship was built, to which an oratory, corresponding to the building to the right of the church, was to be annexed. This institution's primary purpose was to assist those condemned to death in the final hours of their lives. From this site, processions headed to the gallows, located near Porta Tufilla, just outside the walls. Evidence of this is provided by the detached fresco (currently housed in the Civic Art Gallery) depicting the Madonna della Misericordia, originally from the oratory and dating to the mid-15th century. The lower section features engravings with the names of some of the condemned.

Beginning in 1532, the church underwent major renovations and alterations by Cola dell’Amatrice, who worked on the façade, up to the level of the entablature. Work resumed in the second half of the century, perhaps coinciding with the affiliation of the Ascoli Confraternity to the Pietà dei Carcerati of Rome in 1583. Work was carried out by various Lombard stonemasons (who had been very active in the city for about a century and a half) and by the Ascoli native Count Conti. Work on the upper level also involved the interior, which likely drew on designs by Cola himself, presumably created by architects working in the Roman construction sites of Sixtus V.

This renovation and expansion continued until the early 17th century, when the Baroque style was beginning to emerge, when Antonio Giosafatti, founder of the dynasty of architects and sculptors, was entrusted with the construction of the internal apse.

Beautiful church, the interior leaves you speechless, unfortunately no photos, out of respect for the perpetual adoration of Jesus... I had a beautiful, healing and transforming adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and I came out vivified and reborn... Thank God... Of course! 🙏⛪🖐😀👍"

"The Church of Santa Maria della Carità, also known as the Church of the Scopa, as it belonged to the Confraternita della Scopa, is located a short distance from Piazza del Popolo.
The building, whose construction was completed in the 17th century, is decorated inside with paintings, stuccoes and several side altars. In one of them there is a wooden Christ from the 15th century."
