I visited Ballymoon Castle this weekend, just outside Bagenalstown, Carlow. There’s no famous stories or big battles to speak of here. But like a few sites I’ve visited, there’s this strange stillness to it, a kind of calm you can’t really explain. It’s as if you can feel that a lot happened there but it was all a long time ago. I definitely felt it here. Built in the 1300s, most likely by the Ca...

"A lovely castle with large grounds. The castle is nestled in a big field with a large surrounding stone wall. Once inside you can see the structures as they once were, it has many openings in its walls and the fact you can walk around the whole area is a bonus. Parking is on a busy main road and will take time to find a safe parking spot. Its well worth a visit but parking is tricky, cheers"

Michael Raj Groves

"Beautiful place to visit and let the kids roam around and explore. No one else around so we spent ages there. Some rooms and nooks to explore. Then had a walk around the outside of it. Very impressive structure in a stunning countryside location. Parking for 1 car directly across from entrance to field in disused gateway. Will go back again."

Van Man

"Dicey parking, you fly past it the first time turn around through a gate, a bridge, a field to a forgotten gem of a castle. Health and safety be damned, go explore, climb, listen as the wind whispers dreams unspoken for hundreds of years."

The Unique Architecture of Ballymoon Castle

Ballymoon Castle stands out in the landscape of Irish castles due to its unusual and unfinished design. Built between 1290 and 1310, it's a massive 13th-century Norman fortress characterized by its enormous curtain walls, numerous arrow loops, and eight prominent projecting towers. Instagram What makes it particularly distinct is the absence of internal chambers, a tower house, or a roof, suggesting it was either never fully completed or designed for a different purpose than a typical residential castle. This ambitious, yet incomplete, stronghold offers a fascinating glimpse into Norman military architecture and the scale of their ambitions in Ireland. Instagram

Visitors often remark on the 'strange stillness' and 'calm' they feel at Ballymoon, a sentiment that might stem from its unique, almost stark, presence. Instagram Unlike many castles with rich narratives of battles and sieges, Ballymoon's story is more about its construction and its enduring, albeit ruined, form. The fact that it's not thronged with tourists allows for a more personal and contemplative experience, where one can truly appreciate the scale and the wind whispering through its ancient stones. InstagramReddit

Recent archaeological efforts have even begun to uncover more about the castle's surroundings, with digs attempting to find evidence of a lost village that may have once encircled the fortress. Instagram+1 This ongoing research adds another layer of intrigue to Ballymoon, hinting at a more complex history than initially apparent. Exploring Ballymoon is an invitation to step back in time and ponder the lives and intentions of those who built this remarkable, unfinished monument. Reddit

Navigating Parking and Access

One of the most frequently mentioned practical challenges for visitors to Ballymoon Castle is parking. Situated on a busy main road, finding a safe and convenient spot can be difficult, with some travelers admitting they've flown past it on their first attempt. Reddit+1 This can be a deterrent for some, but the reward of exploring this hidden gem often makes the effort worthwhile. Reddit

Fortunately, the local community and fellow travelers have shared effective tips for overcoming this hurdle. A particularly useful piece of advice is to look for a small laneway marked with a green and white bollard, located just past the castle sign. Driving up this laneway, alongside the surrounding fields, leads to an alternative entrance to the castle field where parking is more accessible. Reddit Another suggestion is to look for a disused gateway directly across from the main entrance to the field. Reddit These alternative access points can significantly improve the visitor experience, allowing for easier entry to the castle grounds. Reddit

Once parked, the castle is easily accessible. Visitors can walk around the entire area, exploring the structures and enjoying the expansive grounds. The lack of crowds, especially on weekdays, means you can often have the place almost to yourself, enhancing the sense of discovery and peace. InstagramReddit+1
