What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Tabriz Cartoon Museum is a unique cultural gem, celebrated for being one of the few cartoon museums worldwide and the first in Asia, housed in a historic building. However, visitors should be aware of potential inconsistencies in opening hours and the need to verify them before visiting.
"Closed twice!
We went there, the five of us, on 3rd of April (14 Farvardin) and it was closed on the religious occasion of the Mi'raj (ascension of the Prophet). Ok..
The next day we came back (15 Farvardin) it was ALSO closed! For No Apparent reason! ("Not enough visitors")
Really disappointed. This was advertised as one of the rare cartoon museums in the world, in Iran all the more."

"The former building of the Tabriz National Library, which has now become the only cartoon museum in Azerbaijan."

A Unique Cultural Institution
Established in March 2006, the museum's journey began in the western part of the city's Art House. Its current location in Golestan Garden adds to its appeal, as it resides within a building that is itself a piece of history. This dual significance—both the art it houses and the architecture it occupies—makes a visit particularly enriching.
Despite its unique status, the museum has faced challenges, including inconsistent operating hours and a lack of consistent funding. Visitors are strongly advised to verify opening times before their visit to avoid disappointment. This practical tip, often shared by those who have visited, ensures a smoother experience when exploring this rare cultural gem.
The Historic Building
Over the years, this versatile structure has served multiple roles. It has been an officers' club, a restaurant, a center for the Islamic Revolution Committee, and notably, the Tabriz National Library. This layered history adds a unique dimension to the museum experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the building's past while engaging with contemporary art.
The building's area is approximately 284 square meters. Its affiliation with the General Directorate of Culture and Islamic Guidance indicates its cultural importance, though its operational budget relies on income from the Tabriz Cartoonists Association and government support. This context underscores the community effort involved in maintaining such a unique institution.
