What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Pontianak Royal Tombs offer a significant historical site, with the Sultan's mausoleum being well-maintained. However, visitors frequently report issues with the surrounding area's cleanliness and aggressive, persistent donation requests from individuals, which can detract from the experience.
"This place is very dirty and not well maintained. Rubbish everywhere. People laying down, lingering around. when we went there, they were having some sort of ceremony. They forced you to give money as ‘charity’ 😅"
Aifa
"The place is in good condition as mouseleum for the king and his relatives but the administration is worse. There are women lingering, laying, and smoking beside the king mouseleum and asking for donation. This kind of activity should be cordoned by the authority."
Suria Sulaiman
"The Sultan’s tomb is nice but the people there degrade it.
Took my wife and 2 daughters to visit in late January. There were many people there readily but uncomfortably ushering us in. We had to take our shoes off.
As some of us were in shorts, we were not allowed to go inside the tomb monument. The moment we turned back, we were swamped by everyone, men, women and children asking for money. I said I would put into one of the donation boxes but they said no, no, ‘just give to me’. One of the men even asked for money for the spot for the shoes.
I raised my voice a bit and firmly said I would only deal with one of them (woman), gave her some money and we dashed out to our sampan, terrified!! I was really worried for my family.
We were in there for not even 2 minutes, didn’t even get to walk across to the rocks (batu laying).
What a shame!! Surely the Sultan will not condone such lack of dignity behaviour.
Had a horrible experience there. Unfortunately, can’t recommend a visit to this place until they get their acts right."

* Prepare for solicitations: Talk to your children beforehand about people asking for money and how to respond politely but firmly.
* Keep the visit brief: To avoid prolonged exposure to potentially uncomfortable situations, consider a shorter visit focused on the main mausoleum.

Navigating the Donation Culture
Travelers advise being firm but polite when declining these requests. Some suggest offering a small amount to one designated person to avoid being swarmed. It's crucial to manage expectations and be prepared for this aspect of the visit, as it's a recurring theme in visitor feedback. The government's revitalization efforts have added supporting buildings, but this cultural dynamic appears to persist.
For those who wish to contribute, it's recommended to look for official donation boxes if available, rather than giving directly to individuals who may not be official representatives. This approach can help ensure your contribution goes towards the upkeep of the site rather than personal gain.
Understanding the Historical Context
While the tombs themselves are a focal point, the surrounding area's maintenance has been a point of concern for some visitors. Despite this, the historical significance of the site remains a draw for those interested in local history and culture. The recent revitalization efforts by the government aim to improve the visitor experience and preserve the heritage of the tombs.
Exploring the tombs provides an opportunity to learn about the lineage and influence of the Pontianak Sultanate. It's a place where history is not just read about but can be experienced firsthand, offering a glimpse into the traditions and legacy of the region's royal family.
