What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Merapi is a powerful and awe-inspiring natural wonder, lauded for its active volcanic displays and the thrilling jeep tours that explore its impact zones. Visitors appreciate the challenging summit hike for sunrise and the unique perspectives offered by the eruption-affected areas. However, the unpredictable weather can sometimes obscure views, and the strenuous nature of the summit hike requires good physical condition.
"Awesome volcano, the most active and arguably most dangerous in Indonesia having claimed many lives. While you can no longer hike to the summit there are some amazing views, especially on a clear night when you can see continuous eruptions and lava flows. Also very interesting to visit one of the monitoring stations and affected areas near by."
Jason Adams (Jase)
"This was my first volcano summit in Indonesia and it was definitely remarkable. Unlike your average hike, most tours actually walk almost the whole way to the top in the dark to a) hopefully see an astonishing sunrise and b) avoid the afternoon heat that makes hiking not that fun anymore. Most tour operators will thus pick you up at your place in Yogya around 10-11pm to bring you to New Selo (ca. 1600 meters above sea level), which serves as a starting point. From there you will probably leave at 1am, reaching the summit (2900 and something meters) at 5am, given you’re in good shape, otherwise a bit later. Apart from the last and slippery part right under the summit, this is not a technically difficult hike by any means. However, an elevation of almost 1400 meters on just 3.4km horizontal walking distance consequently means that the trail is pretty steep; at almost every point. The good thing is that you can’t see that in the dark. Be aware that a lot of people (sometimes even more than 50%, as the guides told me) actually are not rewarded with a beautiful sunset, since Merapi is often covered with clouds."

Frequently Asked Questions
🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Most summit hike tours pick you up directly from your accommodation in Yogyakarta around 10-11 PM. For jeep tours, you can arrange pick-up or meet at designated points. The drive to the starting point (New Selo) takes about 1.5-2 hours.
While public transport can get you to nearby towns like Kaliurang or Boyolali, it's not the most convenient way to access the specific hiking trails or jeep tour starting points. Hiring a private car or joining a tour is recommended.
The most popular and exciting way is by taking a jeep lava tour. These tours are readily available from areas like Kaliurang and will take you through the rugged terrain shaped by past eruptions.
While there isn't a general entrance fee for viewing the volcano from afar, specific viewpoints or attractions like the museum might have small admission charges. Jeep tours will have their own pricing.
For the summit hike, it's highly recommended to go with a guided tour for safety and logistical reasons. For exploring the surrounding areas or viewpoints, independent travel is possible but less convenient than organized tours.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
There isn't a single 'ticket' for Mount Merapi itself. For summit hikes, you'll book a tour package. Jeep tours have their own pricing. Access to some viewpoints might involve small local fees.
Summit hike tours typically start very late at night (around 1 AM) to reach the summit for sunrise. Jeep tours usually operate during daylight hours, often starting in the morning and lasting a few hours.
Climbing Mount Merapi to the summit is generally done with a guide or as part of an organized tour for safety reasons, especially due to its active nature.
Prices for jeep tours can vary, but generally range from IDR 350,000 to IDR 500,000 for a private jeep, depending on the duration and route.
When there's an eruption alert, authorities may restrict access to certain areas, especially the summit. Always check the latest official warnings and advisories before planning your visit.
🎫 ⛰️ Onsite Experience
Many visitors opt for a challenging but rewarding summit hike for sunrise, or a fun jeep tour to explore the eruption's impact zones. Scenic viewpoints also offer stunning vistas.
Wear layers as it can be cold at higher altitudes. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential, along with comfortable athletic wear. A headlamp is crucial for night hikes.
The hike is steep, with a significant elevation gain over a short distance. While not technically difficult, it requires good physical fitness. The darkness can make it feel less daunting.
Visibility depends heavily on the weather. Clouds often cover the summit, so there's no guarantee of a clear sunrise, but the experience is still memorable.
Jeep tours take you through areas devastated by past eruptions, visiting sites like bunkers, a museum, and the former home of Mbah Marijan, offering a stark look at the volcano's power.
📸 📸 Photography
Scenic viewpoints around the volcano, especially from Boyolali, offer panoramic shots. The jeep tour sites, like the bunkers and affected villages, provide dramatic and poignant photo opportunities.
Yes, on clear nights, continuous eruptions and lava flows can be seen and photographed from safe viewpoints. However, active eruptions are unpredictable and can be dangerous.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the vast landscapes and the volcano's scale. A telephoto lens can be useful for capturing details of the summit or any visible activity. A sturdy tripod is helpful for low-light conditions. :camerawithflash:
Generally, photography is allowed in most public areas. However, always respect any signage or instructions from guides, especially in sensitive or restricted zones. :camerawithflash:
Early mornings offer soft light and potentially clear skies for dramatic shots of the volcano. Late afternoons can also provide beautiful lighting. For active eruptions, night photography is an option if conditions are safe.

Understanding Mount Merapi's Activity
Due to its persistent activity, climbing to the absolute summit is often restricted. However, this doesn't diminish the visitor experience. Instead, it has led to the development of unique ways to appreciate the volcano's power and beauty, such as the popular jeep lava tours that traverse the eruption-scarred landscapes.
Authorities continuously monitor Merapi's seismic activity. Visitors should always stay informed about the current alert status and follow any safety directives issued by local geological agencies. This vigilance ensures that while you can witness the raw power of nature, you do so with the utmost safety precautions in place.
The Thrill of the Summit Hike
The trail is steep and challenging, with an elevation gain of nearly 1400 meters over about 3.4 kilometers. While not technically demanding, the consistent incline requires good physical stamina. The darkness helps to obscure the steepness, making the climb more manageable. Reaching the summit around 5 AM allows you to witness a potentially spectacular sunrise.
Be prepared for variable weather conditions. The summit can be cold, and clouds frequently obscure the view. Even if the sunrise isn't perfectly clear, the experience of hiking an active volcano under the stars and the sense of accomplishment are well worth the effort. Remember to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water.
Exploring Eruption Zones with Jeep Tours
Key stops often include the 'bunkers' built for shelter during eruptions, a small museum showcasing artifacts and photos from past events, and the poignant remnants of villages, including the famous former residence of Mbah Marijan. The jeep ride itself is an exhilarating experience, navigating rugged, ash-covered terrain.
This tour provides a unique perspective on the resilience of the local communities and the immense power of nature. It's a highly recommended activity for those who want to understand the impact of Merapi without undertaking the demanding climb.
