Reviews Summary

16 Ilir Market offers an authentic Palembang experience with its vast array of goods and delicious, affordable pempek. Visitors appreciate the local vibe and proximity to the Ampera Bridge, though some note ongoing renovations and the need for caution regarding belongings and navigating the terrain. It's a true taste of local life.

"I came here to eat Pempek curah, priced around 1000 rupiahs per pcs. The location is in front near the LRT line. My advice is to be wise in choosing the vendors. When I went there, I just randomly chose a place with an empty seat. The cuko was good, but the pempek itself somewhat less fresh compared to the vendor next door, whose pempek looked more tempting. So, my suggestion is to take a look at the displayed pempek first, don't rush.

The vendors don't sell drinks, but many drink sellera roam around offering drinks to those eating pempek. Be careful with your belongings because there are many people passing by behind

The market itself is not great. Many buildings are currently under renovation. The streets are bad, with lots of potholes and muddy after rain. It's scorching hot when the sun is out. So, prepare an umbrella and wear cool clothing. The only good thing here is the view of the Ampera Bridge"

The Heart of Palembang: A Traditional Market Experience

16 Ilir Market is more than just a place to shop; it's a vibrant cultural hub that offers a genuine glimpse into Palembang life. You'll find everything from daily necessities to unique handicrafts, all within a bustling and energetic atmosphere. The market's direct access to the Musi River and its proximity to the iconic Ampera Bridge add to its charm and significance. Reddit

Navigating the market requires a bit of awareness. While the experience is rewarding, be prepared for crowds, especially during peak hours. Some areas might be undergoing renovation, and the streets can be uneven or muddy after rain. The Palembang heat can also be intense, so dressing appropriately and staying hydrated is key. Despite these minor challenges, the authentic nuance and the sheer variety of goods make 16 Ilir Market a must-visit for those seeking a true local experience. Reddit

For travelers, 16 Ilir Market is a fantastic spot to pick up souvenirs, from traditional clothing and textiles to household items. Remember that haggling is part of the culture here, so don't be shy to negotiate prices. The market also serves as a culinary gateway, with numerous stalls offering Palembang's famous pempek. Reddit

Culinary Delights: Tasting Palembang's Pempek

The undisputed culinary star of 16 Ilir Market is pempek, Palembang's signature fish cake. Made from fish and tapioca, it's typically served with a rich, sweet, and spicy sauce called 'cuko.' At 16 Ilir, you can find 'pempek curah,' which are often sold at very affordable prices, around 1000 rupiahs per piece. Reddit

However, as one reviewer noted, not all pempek stalls are created equal. It's advisable to inspect the pempek display before committing to a vendor. Look for those that appear fresh and tempting. Some visitors found that a randomly chosen stall offered pempek that was less fresh compared to a neighbor's more appealing selection. The cuko sauce, however, is often praised. Reddit

While the pempek vendors might not sell drinks directly, you'll find numerous drink sellers circulating, offering a variety of beverages to accompany your meal. This makes for a complete and authentic local dining experience right within the market's lively setting. TikTok
